EMERGENCY ALERT: VIRUS DETECTED IN SODDO

two confirmed and fatal cases of Marburg virus, a clinically similar cousin to Ebola virus in Soddo. These two people died at the hospital that is near our students' school which means this virus is a very real and very serious threat to our children and staff, as well as our entire community in Soddo. Marburg virus is fatal, with a 50-88% fatality rate, there is no cure, and its effects are horrific.

We currently support 45 students in Soddo. This virus originates in wildlife, and is spread through contact with bodily fluids. As such, in order to keep our children safe and healthy, we must take some very serious steps.

DONATE NOW to help pay for PPE to our students and staff as well as all necessary cleaning supplies!

Help me spread the word about making the grade: hope for african youth inc. Together we can make a difference.

This past Easter, hope arrived in Bishoftu. Making the Grade: Hope For African Youth, in partnership with Chosen Generation, provided food relief to vulnerable families—including the elderly, people living with HIV, and those with disabilities. Powered by student volunteers like Beselam, a nursing student and Esther Program graduate, this effort brought nourishment, dignity, and joy to those who needed it most. 💛 Thank you to our donors for making this possible. Together, we’re changing lives.

Marburg Virus – Student Prevention Protocol
November 2025
What is Marburg Virus?
Marburg virus is a severe, highly infectious virus from the same family as Ebola. It causes Marburg Virus Disease (MVD), which can lead to high fever, bleeding, and organ failure. The virus is carried mainly by fruit bats and can spread to humans, then from person to person through body fluids. There is currently no vaccine or specific cure, but early medical care can improve survival.

How Dangerous is Marburg?
Marburg is one of the world’s deadliest viral diseases. In past outbreaks, between 50% and 90% of patients died. Because it spreads quickly in families and health facilities without protection, preventing infection is very important.

Main Symptoms• Sudden high fever • Severe headache and body weakness • Vomiting and diarrhea • Rash • Bleeding from nose, gums, or in vomit/stool • In severe cases, organ failure

How It Spreads• Contact with blood, vomit, urine, saliva, sweat • Touching contaminated clothes or surfaces • Caring for sick persons without protection • Contact with infected fruit bats or monkeys

Prevention for Students• Wash hands with soap frequently • Do not share water bottles or personal items • Avoid hugging and handshakes • Report any illness immediately • Wear masks if advised

In Case of Symptoms – Contact Immediately.
If any student, or family member shows symptoms such as sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or bleeding: • Do NOT hide the illness • Seek medical attention immediately •

Meet the ladies of our Le’lswa Project: Feven Birhanu (17), Mihiret Desalegn (18), Rediet Rovert (18), and Betselot Asfaw (19).

We launched this program in 2025 to resounding success.
In Ethiopia, only 30% of young women complete secondary education, and many face
barriers such as poverty, lack of safe housing, and social pressures. By combining the
strengths of Gojjo, Yeneta, and Esther, this project provides a holistic solution that
nurtures dignity, independence, and leadership in the next generation of women.

Our Story

Making the Grade is a charitable, youth oriented, educational and medical organization with the purpose of aiding young people obtain educational opportunities that will lead to independence and entrepreneurism. We serve students aged 7-25, with the greatest cluster in the 15-21 year old bracket. Our target country is Ethiopia.

People who are afforded a good education are then able to compete in the work force. People who then are employed can support their families. Education creates independence.

Young people under 25 make up almost two-thirds of Ethiopia’s population. Although the government of Ethiopia has increased the number of public schools, they are often understaffed, under-supplied and located hours by foot from students living in the countryside. We attempt to identify schools that meet the needs of our students and place our students in these schools. Children from poor families are not always given an early education as schools are too far from their homes and their parents are not convinced of the importance of primary education. The need is so great that many children slip through the gap -- many incredibly bright children. We are working with such students throughout the country. Our students come from extremely poor and destitute families, many of our students suffering severe deformities and medical issues. We are one of many organizations trying to help these young people become independent through receiving the educational tools to compete in the Ethiopian and world job markets.
