Today is the final day of world doula week, day 7.
I have loved seeing like minded people in my community and around the world sharing their passion.
How do I make a difference as a Doula?
1) I educate. One of my main goals as I support clients is to make sure they are aware of their options and choices in the birth space. If birthing in a hospital setting, sometimes the care you will receive is the standard of care. You, as the birthing person, deserve more than this.
Why?
Birth is not a one size fits all experience.
It will be individualized to you and your baby.
There is more mystery to it than medical, in my opinion.
2) I advocate. I help my clients advocate for themselves. What does that mean? For me, it means I support them in the choices they are making. I support their decisions and make sure their voice is heard.
3) I support. Birth is unpredictable. It will take unexpected turns (similar to parenting)
Making sure my clients get that continuous care (no shift changes) and to know there will be a steady support system holding them up reminding them of their power.
Simple put, your heart calls you to this job.
Being a doula is hard, challenging, and rewarding. It can be heavy work.
For my fellow birth workers, I applaud your determination for a job that can feel lonely at times and misunderstood.
Thank you for giving us this week to come and share our passion and bring awareness to a profession that is one step closer to being more valued and appreciated.
