Nursemaid’s elbow, also known as Radial Head Subluxation, is a common injury among young children, typically occurring between the ages of 1 to 4. It occurs when a child’s elbow gets partially dislocated. This usually happens when a child is pulled up too hard by their hand or wrist, causing the radius (one of the bones in the forearm) to slip out of its normal position at the elbow joint. It sometimes happens when a child pulls his hand away from a caregiver(for example, if he doesn’t want to walk with his caregiver and his hand is being held).

Symptoms often include refusal to use the arm, holding the arm slightly bent at the elbow, or pain in the elbow.
Prevent nursemaid’s elbow by following these tips:
Do not lift a child by the arms or hands. Lift the child under the arms instead. Do not tug or jerk a child’s hand or arm. Never swing a child by the hands or hands.

Remember, if you suspect your child may have nursemaid’s elbow, it’s crucial to seek medical attention immediately. Doctors can usually quickly and easily fix the problem without long-lasting complications.

“Mutual respect and dignity are critical for teaching children how to treat others. Children learn this by how we treat them, and by how we allow them to treat us. This requires setting limits that allow us to take good care of ourselves and the people around us, including our children.” Jim Fay.
