Serving Exceptional Minds - SEM

Serving Exceptional Minds (SEM) is a LLC 501c3 organization serving young adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). SEM's mission is to provide recreational activities and to help build social capital among young adults with ID. SEM believes that participating in recreational activities and building social capital can help to promote inclusion, develop independence, encourage healthy habits, and create empowerment. SEM was founded in November, 2013 by Doreen Matthews and is based in Georgia. Doreen is a Special Education teacher with over 26 years of teaching experience. She currently works in Transition Services as site instructor and job coach with Fulton County School District, Georgia. In addition, Doreen served as Exceptional Education Department Chair for two years. She has a Masters Degree in Education and holds certifications in Teacher of Orthopedically Impaired, and as a Career Technology Intervention Specialist. She earned her Education Specialist Degree in School Administration and Leadership. Doreen is assisted with the creation of SEM by her Daughters, Donnaree Matthews, JD, Simone Matthews, M.Sc., Dionne Matthews, MSM, and co-worker, Natasha Rowe, BA. Doreen has a passion for serving individuals with ID. She is motivated to further integrate young adults with ID into their community. Her mission is to expand and or provide support, services, and resources beyond their high school years.
