Today in Black History we are celebrating Claudette Colvin. She is an American pioneer of the 1950s civil rights movement and a retired nurse aide. On March 2, 1955, at the age of 15, Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a crowded bus. This was 9 months before the famous incident with Rosa Parks that helped spark the Montgomery bus boycott.

Today in Black History we are celebrating Bayard Rustin. Rustin was a leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He was an advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr., and was the main organizer for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, which helped pave the way for the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Today in Black History we are celebrating Fannie Lou Hammer. She was an American voting and women's rights activist, community organizer, and a leader in the civil rights movement. Hamer was also a co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus, an organization created to recruit, train, and support women of all races who wish to seek election to government office. She helped and encouraged thousands of African-Americans in Mississippi to become registered voters and was known for her resilience in leading the civil rights movement for black women in Mississippi.

February is Black History Month. Today we are celebrating Marsha P. Johnson. She was a prominent figure in the New York City gay rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Johnson was an advocate for homeless LGBTQ+ youth, those affected by H.I.V. and AIDS, and gay and transgender rights. She is also known to have played a huge part of the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a series of protests by the gay community in NYC. Johnson was a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front and co-founded the radical activist group, Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries.

Happy Friday, Wolves! We want to let you know that Wellbeing@UWG is offering some really cool virtual mental health workshops coming up. Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions. If you have depression or you have experienced depression in the past and you want to learn ways to help if your symptoms return, Dealing with Depression is for you. You will learn ways to deal with depression symptoms so you can feel better. This workshop meets February 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, 2:00pm-3:00pm online. Register today through the link in our bio
