Doctors for Global Health Promoting health and human rights with those who have no voice. Visit us at http://www.dghonline.org/

Doctors for Global Health (DGH) is a private, not-for-profit organization promoting health, education, art and other human rights throughout the world. DGH is comprised of hundreds of health professionals, students, educators, artists, attorneys, engineers, retirees and others. Together we build long-term relationships between people and communities around the world to find effective solutions to social justice issues. DGH has a unique way of carrying out its mission, focusing on helping to make underserved communities healthy but in the broadest definition of health possible. DGH helps bring community-oriented primary care to the communities where it works, providing basic health services. In addition, DGH believes education is essential to a community's health, as is economic wellbeing and environmental safety. DGH also promotes human rights, which leads to self-determination, as a fundamental component of health. Furthermore, DGH interweaves the arts into its work, believing the soul needs nourishing as much as the body. DGH works closely with the communities which it accompanies in participatory investigation: being invited by the community, working with it to explore its strengths and weaknesses in health, establishing priorities toward better health, developing initiatives to address the chosen priorities and evaluating their success. DGH works side-by-side with community members as partners rather than clients or victims.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the strength, wisdom, and resilience of Indigenous communities across the Americas and around the world. We recognize the deep injustices and inequities Indigenous peoples have face and continue to face due to colonization, displacement, and systemic neglect.

At Doctors for Global Health (DGH), we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and celebrate their leadership in advancing community health and human rights. In Mexico, our partners have worked alongside Indigenous communities to strengthen access to equitable healthcare, promote traditional healing practices, and uplift community-led models of care that center cultural identity and self-determination.

This day serves as a reminder that global health cannot exist without justice for Indigenous peoples. As we reflect, let us recommit to listening, learning, and supporting Indigenous-led movements that defend land, language, and life.

Call to Action:
We invite you to honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day not only in words but through action by advocating for policies that protect Indigenous sovereignty, supporting Indigenous health initiatives, and amplifying Indigenous voices in your communities.

Together, we can continue building a world rooted in dignity, respect, and equity for all peoples.

Today, on National Latino Physician Day, we honor the dedication and leadership of Latino physicians across the country and especially recognize our own physician within DGH! Dr. Manuel's work not only uplifts patients and communities here in the U.S. but also shines a light on the systemic inequities in rural communities in Mexico, where access to care, resources, and investment remain limited. By addressing these disparities head-on, he embodies DGH’s mission of advancing health equity and social justice. We celebrate his commitment to healing, advocacy, and amplifying the voices of the most underserved. On we invite our community to join us in standing with Latino physicians everywhere and supporting efforts that challenge inequities, expand access to care, and strengthen health for all.

Presidents Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele are running parallel authoritarian projects that use national security to justify human rights abuses via mass incarceration. Platforms like MAGA and Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party cloak their abuses of power as concern for public safety, scapegoating immigrants or weaponizing fears of gang violence to further their agendas. The truth is, facilities like Alligator Alcatraz in Florida and CECOT in El Salvador don’t exist to protect the public — they seek to terrorize marginalized communities and set a precedent for indefinite detention with no hope of due process.

Join Lourdes Palacios, a popular movement leader and former senior government official in El Salvador, in discussing her work to free political prisoners and support their families.

Hear from Mneesha Gellman, associate professor and director of the Emerson Prison Initiative, who recently visited El Salvador and spent time interviewing prisoners at CECOT and other Salvadorian facilities.

We will also learn from our cosponsor CISPES (The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) who will share details about their upcoming week of action, beginning September 15th, providing us with specific ways that the audience can get involved!

We won’t stand by as civilians permanently disappear into state-sanctioned prison camps. Learn about the connections between U.S. and Salvadoran carceral regimes, and how you can take action. Live interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish.
