CRAB Children Raised Around the Blind Supporting families with a kid or visually impaired family member. And awareness of blindness Some may be raised by blind parents.

This page is a place for Children who were raised around the blind to meet and socialize. Others may have a sibling or grandparent who is blind. Here we want to talk about the struggles and benefits to be around the blind. We have a different perspective than those who are raised without blind people. We have learned to do many day-to-day tasks like the blind. We are used to getting stared at in public. We are also used to having to describe things in ways that would embarrass most other children. We are here to support one another.

Personal Update on life and a new blog post. Sometimes it is hard having a passion, but not having the want to monetize. That is part of what is going on with CRAB. Hopefully, as I slowly evaluate ways to help with cost we can do more. But for this next season of Life we will just have the blog and YouTube page.

We've been busy on the home front this year. Hoping to get some podcasts and blog posts written up during Christmas break. Homeschooling 2 kids, dealing with grief from the loss of our third child 13 months ago and now being pregnant
CRAB has been on the back burner. Hoping to reignite it soon. Plus a new store front. We will have tumblers, pre-orders for shirts, and all the books I have been writing. Maybe 2027s goal will be to finally finish writing my book about growing up with a blind parent. Stay tuned for that and more.

Blow the dust off that old record player because is tomorrow! Inventor Thomas Edison first thought of the 33-1/3 rpm record as a medium to, among other things, allow readers who are blind to listen to long books without frequent interruptions. These “talking books” were one of the potential uses for the phonograph that he listed when he applied for a patent in 1877. Today, we are sharing a black-and-white NLS photograph from the 1930s, showing one of the earliest talking-book machines, which played 33-1/3 rpm records. Talking-book readers had access to long-playing records 14 years before LPs were available commercially!

We’re a day late and a dollar short in celebrating National Dollar Day, which was yesterday. But here’s good news: all year ’round, NLS partners with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) to support the US Currency Reader Program. This program provides free currency reader devices to those eligible who are visually impaired. The currency reader is a compact device that announces a paper note’s value when the note is inserted. To learn how to get a currency reader and similar BEP mobile apps, visit www.loc.gov/nls/services-and-resources/us-currency-reader-program.
