Adapting Your Home for Independence:
Making small adjustments to your home can make a big difference in your daily life as an amputee. Grab bars in the bathroom, non-slip rugs, and wider pathways can improve safety and ease of movement. Consider rearranging furniture to create a smoother flow and keeping frequently used items within easy reach. If you use a prosthetic, a sturdy chair or bench in your entryway can help with putting it on. Technology like voice-activated assistants or adaptive kitchen tools can also make life easier. The goal is to create a space that works for you, so don’t be afraid to get creative with solutions!

Staying Active as an Amputee…
Movement is key to maintaining strength and independence, even with limb loss. Whether it’s seated exercises, swimming, yoga, or adaptive sports, there’s something for everyone. Staying active improves circulation, reduces pain, and boosts mental health. Start slow and listen to your body—there’s no rush. Finding a supportive community, whether online or in-person, can also keep you motivated. The more you move, the stronger and more capable you’ll feel. Small steps lead to big progress!

Choosing the Right Prosthetic (Or Not!)

Not all amputees choose to use a prosthetic, and that’s okay. If you do, finding the right one is a process that takes patience. Work closely with your prosthetist to ensure a comfortable fit and proper alignment. Be prepared for adjustments—what works initially may need fine-tuning over time. If a prosthetic isn’t right for you, there are still many ways to stay mobile and independent. The most important thing is finding what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Phantom Pain—Understanding and Managing It

Phantom pain is real, and it can be frustrating. Even though your limb is no longer there, your brain still “feels” it, sometimes causing discomfort. Some people find relief through mirror therapy, massage, heat packs, or even meditation. If the pain is severe, speak with a doctor about medication options or alternative treatments. Staying active and distracted can help reduce episodes. The key is to experiment with different techniques to see what works for you. Don’t suffer in silence—solutions exist, and relief is possible.

The Emotional Journey of Amputation

Losing a limb is more than just a physical change—it’s an emotional journey. It’s normal to feel grief, frustration, and even anger at times. But over time, many amputees find a new rhythm in life, discovering strength they didn’t know they had. Surround yourself with supportive people who uplift you, and don’t be afraid to seek professional counseling if needed. Your feelings are valid, but they don’t define you. Every day, you have the opportunity to adapt and grow. You are not alone, and your journey matters.

Our Story

Abled Amputees of America, a not for profit organization formed to inspire, support and educate. Our main purpose is to give those with limb loss, real hope for their future by helping them grow in body, mind and spirit. A community created to en-Able persons who have lost a limb through birth, disease or surgery, to grow stronger and be able. Hello, my name is Doug Durham RN. Founder of Abled Amputees. I was physically disabled as a child, suffering from a brittle bone syndrome, which led to more hospitalizations than I care to count. I was blessed to have been raised in a Christian home. So, with God's help and the support of my family, I learned to take my problems in stride. I grew to learn that my life is as meaningful as any life ever created. People spoke to me of hope and peace that was out there somewhere... all I had to do was find it. Spending a good part of my childhood encased in a body cast, lying in a hospital bed, I taught myself to play the guitar, to entertain myself. At age 16, I became a right AKA. As my health improved, my guitar playing soared, and allowed me to start a career in music that lasted many years. Music was a perfect distraction from all I had endured yet it was not providing the piece I was seeking. I somehow knew that true happiness would never be mine as long as there were others out there who needed what I had found. God kept nudging me and He wouldn't leave me alone. For this I am very thankful. More than 25 years ago, I finally answered the call as I started my studies in behavioral health nursing. God and I have helped many, many people gain control over anxiety and depression, obesity, diabetes and drug and alcohol addictions. Now, my energy is focused on the amputee world, striving to make a real difference in their lives. This is what I was meant for! This is how I can help you: by coaching not only the body you live in and the mind which governs it, but your spirit in your heart as well. It works. I know. For your safety and well-being, you should consult you MD, Physical therapist and or Prosthetist before using any of the information and tips given on this page. Abled Amputees is not responsible for any injury or any cause of bodily harm do to information on this page. Thanks you, Doug Durham RN, Amputee Life Coach.
