The James Densler Surgical Society Banquet brought together students, residents, faculty and staff for an evening of celebration and recognition within our surgical community.

This annual, student-led event honors graduating students who have matched into residency and highlights the contributions of those who support their journey along the way. The evening featured a meaningful awards ceremony, including Outstanding Attending (Dr. Aaron Alford) and Outstanding Resident (Dr. Eliel Arrey), both selected by students.

Additional student awards included the General Surgery Student Award (Julia Vasquez-Gonzales) and the Asa Yancey Award (Jarius Garner). The JDSS Executive Board also recognized Dr. Jaimo Ahn for exceptional commitment to student mentorship and engagement.

We are honored to announce that U.S. Congressman and proud alumnus Dr. Rich McCormick (Representative Rich McCormick) will return to campus as the keynote speaker for Morehouse School of Medicine’s 42nd Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Dr. McCormick’s path from MSM student body president to emergency physician, military veteran and member of Congress reflects a lifelong commitment to service, leadership and community impact. As the first and only MSM alumnus elected to the United States Congress, his story is a powerful example of what is possible through purpose-driven leadership.

Centered on this year’s theme, Prevention, Policy, and Public Health: The Intersections Shaping Community Health, the symposium explored how collaboration across sectors can create healthier futures for all.

The event also spotlighted the next generation of changemakers, as students shared research and innovative ideas that reflect the future of equitable healthcare and public health leadership.

Setbacks didn't stop Onyinye Okonma — they strengthened his purpose.

The graduating MD student at Morehouse School of Medicine turned years of challenges into motivation, ultimately finding his path to becoming a physician and leader.

Now preparing to graduate this May, Onyinye is using his story to open doors for others. As co-founder of MEDnBlack, he is helping Black and underrepresented students navigate nontraditional paths to medicine through mentorship, resources and community. His journey reflects the power of resilience and the importance of creating opportunity for the next generation of physicians.
