Trey was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on Memorial Day weekend of 2011. He was born on December 17th 2005 along with his twin sister, Ellie. Together they weighed in at a whopping 14 lbs!! Both were healthy babies and continued on to be healthy toddlers. It's pretty safe to say that Diabetes rocked our world that weekend. What had began as a fun day to the start of what was going to be an awesome summer became the beginning of a 5 day stay in the hospital. Once we got past the shock of the diagnosis, we quickly went into learning mode. Being on the children's wing of a hospital for a week helps to put things into perspective pretty quick. Once we were able to understand that we didn't cause his diabetes and we couldn't have prevented it we made a decision to embrace it. As his parents, we became a nurse, a dietician, a nutritionist, a mathematician, a scientist, & a chemist over night. But more importantly, Trey quickly became the bravest kid you’ll ever meet. In an instant, Trey became insulin dependent. That's right, his life now depended on a manufactured drug that was delivered through 8-10 injections a day. Diabetes silently crept into our world that weekend. And it's been like that house guest that just won't leave. Diabetes never sleeps, it never takes a vacation and it just doesn't care the emotional toll that is takes on a little boy and his family. With the addition of Roxy into our household we hope to give Trey additional peace of mind that we will protect him from this disease at all costs. The beauty of nature is that these dogs are able to detect highs and lows before any state of the art testing device can. There are some days that we say "hey, we've got this" and then there are days that Diabetes reminds us that we only have so much control. As Trey grows and faces the challenges of life ahead, we feel so fortunate that he will have Roxy at his side. She’s not just a pet, a furry friend or an animal.... she’s a lifeline. UNTIL THERE’S A CURE, THERE’S A D.A.D!!
