I get this question all the time.

Here’s the short version:
Nutrition coaching teaches you what proteins, carbs, and fats are — and how to make better food choices.
Functional Nutrition goes deeper.

When I work with clients, we use lab testing, targeted nutrition therapy, and lifestyle strategy to uncover why your body feels off — and then build a plan that actually restores balance.

But what I'll also say is that the biggest objection I hear from women who reach out to me about changing their health is "I need to talk to my husband first."

Totally Fair.

But if I can also provide a reframe for you...

Your health is your family's health. Your energy, moods, and sanity affect everyone around you at the same time you're the one doing most of the shopping, prepping, cooking, shuttling the kids and more.

These symptoms are super common for women in Perimenopause, but they’re most definitely not normal.

As we age the accumulation of life events that negatively impact the quality and function of our microbiome are abundant…
Antibiotics used throughout life
Standard American Diet full of processed foods
Sodas sweetened with aspartame and splenda
Chronic stress
Eating on the run
Toxic cleaning and beauty products
…have all been shown in research to negatively impact the diversity, quality and function of the microbial species in our digestive tract.

There are a lot of new faces here recently, so I thought I'd take a second and reintroduce myself!

I’m Dana — I'm a 45 year old wife to my amazing husband of 20 years and mom to our daughters, Riley and Donavan as well as our menagerie of chickens and our Great Dane Odin (who you will likely see interrupting a video of mine soon) 🤣

I know you've spent most of your life thinking you weren't good enough.

I wish more women knew this...

You’re probably aware that stress triggers your body into fight-or-flight (Sympathetic Mode), leading to a surge in cortisol and adrenaline into the body.

āš ļø When stress is ongoing, cortisol stays elevated longterm and results in symptoms like fatigue, acne, insomnia, weight gain, digestive issues, mood swings, hormonal imbalance, insane cycles and more.
ā€Œ
šŸ¤”BUT it's not just mental and emtional stresses that push you over that edge. You might be thinking, ā€˜I don’t feel stressed! So how can my stress response be active?’ The things that stress your body are anything that overwhelms your body’s systems and negatively impacts its ability to respond to challenges or adversity.
ā€Œ
There are four main triggers that will push your body into Sympathetic Mode and keep it stuck there:
ā€Œ
1ļøāƒ£ Chronic Emotional Stress (past and present). This refers to the long-term or ongoing emotional stressors in your life, which can include unresolved past traumas, current emotional challenges & even overly worrying about what the future holds & what might be.
ā€Œ
2ļøāƒ£ Inflammation. Linked to issues like insufficient hydrochloric acid, cholesystectomy, pancreatic insufficiency, food sensitivities, leaky gut, or hidden pathogenic infections, can keep the stress response activated.

3ļøāƒ£ Blood Sugar Dysregulation. Caused by nutrient and mineral deficiencies and improper meal timing disrupts your body’s ability to manage stress as well as being an additional source of stress.

4ļøāƒ£ Circadian rhythm disruptions. Irregular sleep patterns, disturbances in your natural sleep-wake cycle, excessive caffeine intake, apnea, forced time changes also trigger & cause the body to stay in stress.

After your brain, heart and lungs, your liver is arguably your most important vital organ because of the sheer volume of essential functions it orchestrates to run your body.

Signs your liver is sluggish and contributing to weight gain, inability to lose weight, hormonal symptoms and blood sugar dysregulation:

Weight Gain or Inability to Lose Weight… despite working out regularly and eating healthy
Consistent overnight wakeups between 2-4 AM even if it’s ā€œjust to peeā€
Skin Eruptions… Acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rashes
Fatigue… no matter how much sleep you get

Down 43 pounds of body fat in 32 months and she's just getting started!

That's a average fat loss of 1.34 pounds of fat per month that we've been working together, but I'll be honest and say that the real fat loss didn't start until we we well into LaCuana's journey together.

Why, you ask?

Because fat loss doesn't just "happen" when you change your diet and start exercising IF you have other chronic health conditions that take top priority.

Most of the women who work with me have several underlying metabolic dysfunctions that have caused weight gain as just one of their many symptoms.

This was LaCuana's story as well. Her body was SO stressed from:
Autoimmunity
Lack of sleep and sunshine
Processed food intake
Multiple nutrient deficiencies
Digestive Dysfunction
Hormonal Imbalances
Severe Adrenal Insufficiency

That it took over a year of consistent work on her habits to get her:
Able to fall asleep when everyone else does
And to wake up before noon
Taking in enough nutrients and calories from real food to support her body's metabolism and HPA Axis

To get her to a place where her body was 1) functioning well enough and 2) felt safe enough to start letting her use the stored energy she had... body fat.

How did we do this together?
Established night time and morning routines that revolved around winding down properly and getting into the sun first thing
Weaned off caffeine, added electrolytes in the morning and got her eating within 45 minutes of waking to break her fast and balance blood sugar.
Worked on eating at regular intervals to get in enough food and keep energy/ blood sugar stable all day.

Those foundational habits plus consistent strength training and a few essential supplements later and the last 17 pounds of fat loss has happened over the last 6 months! That's an average fat loss of 2.86 lbs per month.

As I said yesterday... the inside precedes the outside.

LaCuana had to heal the function of multiple internal body systems to make this progress possible and she's not losing momentum now!
