Is It Really Necessary To Have a Birth Plan?

❣️We all know the saying, “Not all things go as planned”, but that shouldn’t stop us from trying to set ourselves up for success.

❣️One reason I’m glad that I had a birth plan is because it was a layout for how I wanted my labor and delivery to go. It also includes how you want your baby to be cared for afterwards.

❣️It’s also a good idea to have a birth plan because it is empowering. In a hospital setting, you already feel like you are not in control, like you just have to follow what the nurses and doctors say, but the reality is, it’s YOUR body and YOUR baby and YOUR decisions.

❣️Of course, we’re hoping everything goes well and as planned, but life is unexpected. Knowing what to prepare for during a big medical procedure like giving birth is way better than going in clueless and powerless.

This month marks a year since I decided to quit my job of 11 years to become a stay at home mom, and let’s just say that I’m still trying to figure this out. For the first half of the year, I was pregnant with my second child and it was tough. Chasing a 1 year old around all day while carrying another in my belly was exhausting!...

"They told you to make a birth plan and they showed you how to breathe through contractions
But did anyone show you how to breathe through the rage you would feel
When your husband goes out for drinks with his friends
2 weeks after birth
While you swaddle and bounce and bite your lip through the pain of latching and sob inexplicably and try to p*e and pull up your maternity leggings with one hand because this precious babe of yours refuses to be put down
And you wonder how you can feel so overwhelmingly in love
And so unbearably resentful at the same time
In those cute birthing classes, did anyone tell you how you would passively-agressively compete
for the prize of "most exhausted"
As though your week-old unwashed hair and milk stained tshirt was a trophy
won by sheer resilience
And how you would hold it over his head
And punish him in your mind for every moment he snored in well-rested bliss
Did anyone show you how to cut your meals one handed
While precariously balanced over the kitchen counter
In that one magic position that keeps the baby asleep
Shoveling a half-defrosted casserole into your mouth
Because food is purely fuel at that point
And your body is running on cold tea and cereal bars
Trying to keep up with the demands of nourishing tiny human
They told you how grow the baby and birth the baby and tend to the baby
But did anyone tell you how to tend to
this new you? To this new version of your partnership?
Two raw, tender humans
Thrown into the deep end
Trying to find their footing
In the deepest well of exhaustion and stress
Just keep breathing.
Even when the air catches in your throat.
Even when it feels to heavy to inhale.
Just keep breathing.
You'll find your way."

I’m not the person I once was.

Not the same woman, wife or friend.

I’m the mother immersed in early motherhood.

I struggle to make it anywhere on time. I’m always covered in children
or some sort of stain. And I regularly have to leave early.

I don’t have as much time to give my husband. I forget to tell him how
much I love and appreciate him. Yet I rely on him so much more.

I haven’t seen some of my friends in months. I regularly forget to
check in with them or message them back. I can’t remember the last
time I caught up with them without children in the middle.

And this adjustment hasn’t always been easy.
Some days I miss parts of the woman, the wife, and the friend I used be.
The reliable one.
The consistent one.
The relaxed and carefree one.

But the changes have been worth it.
Because I have gained so much.

I have experienced growing, birthing and feeding babies. I’ve seen a
mental and physical strength in myself that I didn’t know I had.

I have felt the privilege of being an entire world to another human.
To have the honour of helping them on their path to create their own.

I understand what it is to be loved in a way only a mother knows. To
be wanted and needed so deeply. So purely and without condition.

Since becoming a mother my priorities have changed.
My values have changed.
I have changed.

But it’s the best sort of change.
Every single change is, no matter the difficulties that come with some of them.

These changes have been the making of me.
A new me.
The mother born into me.

And I will keep changing.
I will keep evolving alongside my children, as we move through the
seasons together.

Because that’s what it takes to be a mother.
That’s what comes with a love like this.
It’s growth.
It’s adapting.
And above all, it’s moving in the direction of your heart.
