No matter how we present the information, we often get told we are shaming a parent when we point out unsafe practices.

Why do we share the information?

❗️Because we didn’t know until someone told us.

❗️Because he hear time and time again from loss parents that they wish they had known.

❗️Because giving someone the facts to help them make an informed decision can make all the difference.

It did for me, and many others who fight along side us.

When you are sharing the information here are some tips:

✅ Be kind.
✅ Let them know it’s not their fault that they didn’t know. You don’t know what you don’t know right!?
✅ Feel free to share our links Incase they want to ask questions. They can do so in the group or privately through our page messages.
✅ Tell them something they are doing right.

A safety advocacy friend of ours who lost her son in 2016 said this phrase on a live and it has been stuck in my head ever since.

Babies don’t come with a manual and we do not magically get all the wisdom we need to take care of them the second they are placed in our arms.

It would be super helpful if we just automatically knew what to do, but that’s rarely the case and …THAT’S OK!

Why am I telling you this?

Because I want you to know that it’s ok to admit that you didn’t know.

You haven’t failed as a parent because you didn’t automatically know that something was unsafe to do.

It’s ok to realize that you were misinformed and make the necessary changes once you found out.

Doing better once you know better doesn’t make you a bad parent. It actually makes you an amazing one.

I didn’t breastfeed my newborn, and I shouldn’t have to provide a “valid” explanation.

🌈 A rainbow baby is one born after a miscarriage or stillbirth or loss during infancy. There is a particular description that has floated around the BabyCenter Community for years that we love:

"Rainbow Babies" is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravages of the storm. When a rainbow appears, it doesn't mean the storm never happened or that the family is not still dealing with its aftermath. What it means is that something beautiful and full of light has appeared in the midst of the darkness and clouds. Storm clouds may still hover, but the rainbow provides a counterbalance of color, energy, and hope. 🌈❤️

Written by Jody Segrave-Daly, MS, RN, IBCLC As a NICU/nursery nurse and IBCLC who has worked with newborn babies my entire nursing career, I was mystified when I first heard the phrase “second-night syndrome.” When I began to research where the phrase came from, it became clear that it is not ba...
