Happy Juneteenth Sunrise Family!

It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth comes from "June" and "nineteenth", referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.

Happy Friday Sunrise Family!🌂

Did you know that some people with epilepsy can have seizures triggered by music! This is called musicogenic epilepsy, and it's super rare. For some individuals, specific songs, rhythms, or even emotional responses to music can trigger a seizure. Interestingly, it's often only certain pieces of music — not all sound — that cause this effect. Brains are interesting, right?

Did you know that some seizures can trigger intense feelings of bliss or euphoria. These are known as ecstatic seizures or Dostoevsky's epilepsy, named after the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, who experienced them. During such seizures, individuals may experience profound feelings of joy, spiritual transcendence, and altered perceptions of time and self. These experiences are thought to result from epileptic activity in a brain region called the anterior insula, which is involved in processing emotions and self-awareness.

Today's fun fact has to do with Autism.

Did you know that people on the autism spectrum often have incredible attention to detail and can excel in areas like music, art, math, or memory-related tasks. Some individuals can recall specific dates, events, or facts with amazing accuracy — this is sometimes called hyperthymesia or savant abilities.

For example, Daniel Tammet, an autistic savant, can recite pi to over 22,000 digits and learned Icelandic in a week!

🚨 **Georgia just passed “Ridge’s Law” (SB 259)** — a new law that strengthens protections in child abuse cases. If a doctor takes temporary custody of a child over suspected abuse, they must quickly notify parents and report to authorities. Parents now have the right to get an independent medical opinion, and courts must consider those results. This helps prevent misdiagnosis and ensures fairness in child welfare cases. 🧒⚖️

Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behavior. The term "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity.

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a group of rare diseases that affect the brain and cause problems with movement, like trouble walking, balancing, slurred speach, tremors, muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, cognitive changes, and loss of fine motor skills. An interesting fact is that some types of SCAs get worse over time and can start earlier in each generation, meaning children of people with the disease may experience symptoms at a younger age. This happens because the genetic change that causes the disease can grow bigger as it’s passed down in families.
