Receptive vs. Expressive Language: What’s the Difference?

Understanding how we communicate starts with two key skills:
👂 Receptive Language is how we receive and understand information—spoken words, written text, gestures, and more.
🗣️ Expressive Language is how we share our thoughts—through speech, writing, gestures, or art.

Both are essential for connection, learning, and growth. Whether you're supporting a child’s development or enhancing communication in your team, recognizing these skills helps build stronger relationships.

✨ Tip: If someone struggles to express themselves, they may still understand a lot—patience and creative support go a long way!

🚫Did you know that we are a fragrance-free zone? 🚫
Products like perfumes, colognes, scented lotions, and more can trigger allergic reactions and sensitivities. For the health and comfort of our patients, faculty, student clinicians, and staff, please avoid these products when visiting our facilities.

Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and welcoming space for everyone!

Families, pediatric healthcare providers, and hearing specialists all play a role in getting a child’s hearing assessed in a timely manner and can help ensure prompt enrollment in intervention when necessary.

Parents: If you think your child might be deaf or hard of hearing, talk with your doctor as soon as possible. Don't wait! If your child does not pass a hearing screening, ask their doctor for a full hearing test as soon as possible.
Providers: ensure that children who do not pass their newborn hearing screen are diagnosed and enrolled in early intervention by reporting a child's diagnostic and follow-up data to their state's EHDI program.
