đź“°BIDDEFORD | Our Fire Department Highlights Excellence in Emergency Medical Services

By Danica Lamontagne, City of Biddeford Communications, Contributing Writer

May 19, 2026, As the nation celebrates National EMS Week (May 17-23) under the 2026 theme “Improving Outcomes, Together,” the City of Biddeford recognizes the dedicated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals of the Biddeford Fire Department for their essential role in protecting community health and safety.

In 2025, Biddeford Fire Department members responded to nearly 4,400 EMS incidents, operating two full‑time ambulances and a paramedic intercept unit to ensure rapid, high‑quality medical response throughout the city. The Department’s EMS team includes 51 licensed providers, including the Department’s three Chiefs. Of these professionals, 33 are Paramedics, 12 are Advanced EMTs, and 5 are EMTs.

To further strengthen the City’s emergency response capabilities, several members are currently advancing their clinical education: four providers are enrolled in Paramedic school, and three are completing Advanced EMT (AEMT) training, all of whom are on track to become Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers this fall.

There is a cultural shift happening within the fire service and we are proud to be a part of it. Yesterday we were honored to present at the Penobscot County Fire 1&2 program. Most impressive was to learn our class was the very first program presented to these students. Mental health and wellness has moved from the shadows to the foundational building block of a healthy and sustainable career. Thank you for the invitation, be safe!

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of active Firefighter William "Bill" Avery, who passed away following a sudden medical event on February 11, 2026.
Bill joined our ranks in 2022 and quickly became a vital part of our team. Whether it was responding to calls at all hours or stepping up for community PR events, Bill’s dedication was unmatched. He never hesitated to take on a task, no matter how big or small, and his commitment to the citizens of Belgrade and beyond was evident in everything he did.
Bills Service to the department and community will not be forgotten, and a hole in our ranks will be deeply felt.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill’s wife, his children, and his entire family and circle of friends during this difficult time.
Rest easy, Bill. We have the watch from here. Town of Belgrade, Maine
