🌽 Your ultimate guide to corn stalk grazing this fall season is here! Tune in below as our Ph.D. in Nutrition, Jeffrey Folmer, shares valuable strategies to consider when transitioning cattle to stalks. With these expert tips, you can effectively manage and prevent overconsumption of corn.
1. Fencing: Use movable electric fences to implement strip grazing, limiting access to corn and ensuring controlled consumption.
2. Supplement with Hay: Balance the rumen by supplementing with hay as filler, providing a well-rounded diet for the cattle.
3. Balancer Mineral: Since corn is rich in phosphorus, there may not be a need for additional supplementation. Balancer minerals, high in limestone (calcium carbonate), can serve as a suitable alternative.
4. Sodium Bicarbonate: Consider feeding 2-4 ounces per head per day of sodium bicarbonate. Allow cattle to consume as needed, as more bicarbonate leads to increased acid neutralization. You can also introduce it into the water tank initially.
5. Estimate Down Corn: To determine the amount of corn available, count the number of ears in 100 yards of row (or 3 rows for 100ft) and equate it to the number of bushels. It's recommended to perform this estimation in 5-10 spots in the field for an accurate estimate
