We are often asked — what is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s?

🧠 Dementia is the diagnosis — a general term for a decline in memory, thinking, or reasoning severe enough to interfere with daily life.
🧠 Alzheimer’s disease is the underlying cause in nearly 70% of dementia cases, making it the most common form.

This distinction is critical. A diagnosis of dementia describes the symptoms; Alzheimer’s identifies the disease most often behind them. With the passage of Amendment 14, DPRIT will expand research into prevention and treatment, giving families clearer answers, earlier diagnoses, and stronger support.

Texans will change the future on November 4th. Voting YES on Amendment 14 will establish DPRIT and secure $3 billion for the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Through the leadership of the DKR Fund and Alzheimer’s Texas, the state of Texas has established the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT) to shape the future of brain health. When passed, Amendment 14 will deliver $3 billion over 10 years to DPRIT — transforming Texas into the model for dementia research and prevention nationwide.

This investment will:
✔️ Fund research on causes, prevention, and treatments
✔️ Attract top researchers to Texas
✔️ Increase the chances of effective treatments and cures
✔️ Bring hope and answers for families across our state

📅 Join the DKR Fund and Alzheimer’s Texas on November 4 in voting YES on Amendment 14.

Texas Governor and First Lady Abbott welcome the future of Alzheimer’s prevention in Texas.

On September 22, Alzheimer’s Texas and the Darrell K Royal Research Fund board members joined Governor Greg Abbott and First Lady Cecilia Abbott at the Governor’s Mansion. Together, we passed Senate Bill 5 and SJR 3 — legislation that created the Dementia Prevention Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT) and placed Amendment 14 on the November ballot.

When passed, Amendment 14 will secure $3 billion in permanent funding dedicated to dementia prevention and research.

This milestone reflects years of advocacy, collaboration, and determination from our leaders, families, and supporters across our state. With broad statewide support, the effort has brought us to this pivotal moment—now it is in Texans’ hands.

📅 On November 4, we are asking for voters to help change the future of Alzheimer’s prevention and cure by voting YES for Amendment 14 - DPRIT.

Raising awareness is more than wearing purple—it’s about sparking conversations, sharing knowledge, and working together toward better treatments and, one day, a cure.

While occasional forgetfulness can be age-related, consistent short-term memory loss — such as repeating questions, misplacing items, or difficulty recalling names — may be an early cognitive symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. Identifying these signs early is critical for treatment planning and long-term care.

They're abnormal protein build-ups in the brain.
🪙 Amyloid plaques = clumps that block cell-to-cell signals
🧵 Tau tangles = twisted fibers that disrupt nutrients inside cells
Together, they damage brain function—leading to memory loss, confusion, and ultimately Alzheimer’s disease.

Forgetfulness with age is like a dusty bookshelf—you can still find the book later.
With Alzheimer’s, the book may be gone entirely.
Knowing the difference matters. 💜
