Posture is Dynamic. Your brain is always managing your body - why not manage your body intentionally?

The differences from one day to another in ankles, shoulders, pelvis, ribs - if i had a long day in a bad position, my posture shows it.

My scoliosis pushes my ribs out right and pulls my left hip forward - i am always managing this.

Your confidence, hormones, and the way people percieve you are also represented by your good or bad posture. Change it! Manage it.

My back was a little irritated from the holidays (left), today (right) before doing any activity. Your posture is dynamic, your lower brain is always keeping score and adapting to your daily stimulus. For better or worse it will adapt to what you're doing the most. You can use your higher brain (thinking) to curate your daily positions and help your low brain manage your posture better.

The hip hike here is my low brain making space for a disc irritation - even though such an extreme position could cause more issues. I only ever had the slightest hint of pain but if I wasnt returning to neutral this may have progressed to an injury

Okay so your shoes might be killing you, I know they look so cool - a fashion statement, a part of who you are. We all have flaws.

Shoes with a raised heel force the pelvis and spine to navigate a change in angle, many people tolerate it well for a long time, but not forever as over half of american adults have had low back pain. This means tall heels, and it also means your Nikes. Shoes with zero drop are becoming more available as time goes on, this was a big step for me in finding better foot/ankle/hip health when I switched to Xero Shoes, I have tried some others like merril, and vibram - but I love xero the best. I am an affiliate - but they have shoes for all occasions that wont kill you slowly.

Another thing about regular shoes is that they push the toes together to varying degrees based on the style. Our feet have as many nerve endings as our hands, imagine if you spent 8+ hours daily with your fingers in sock and inside a hard rubber mitten - your hands would unsurprisingly get stiff and insensitive as a result of the deprivation. Okay now think about it with your feet. Wide toe boxes, and toe spacers are the answer to this.

You can find more about xero shoes and get your own if you check out the xero affiliate link on my smart bio

Toe spacers are an incredible space age way to change the operating position of your toes for function etc. I use mine whenever I wear closed toe shoes - they will only fit will in foot shaped shoes like xero (my only shoe type) or other wide boxed shoes. Keeps my feet and calves working well, and prevents some stimulation that might further my bunion. Yes bunion.

I found out that I have a bunion in 2018, when scanning my foot for a cyst - ended up being foot cancer! Anyways so bunions are actually an adaptation to poor posture and movement a majority of the time. I think mine is from a krav maga accident, attending our weekly group class as a park ranger (right?) - soo

When your big toe is pointing to the outside of your knee, the line of force doesnt involve the big toe - and your body is unstable. In an effort to meet the line of force, your big toe joint enlarges over time to adapt. I have seen someone with such an advanced bunion that it literally looked like a 2nd sideways big toe, and guess where her knee was pointing when standing? RIGHT AT THE BUNION.

Many traditionally shaped shoes push the big toe in and encourage bunion positive activity, it’s a health epidemic really. More on that in a shoe post, but check out Xero shoes - you can find my affiliate link in my profile bio

There are a lot of toe spacers out there. I like correctoes - they fit great in my xeros and keep my toes pretty wide. I have had some clients tried off brands from amazon and some are cool but others actually hold the toes together, or can’t be worn in a short or with a lot of walking. Been using correctoes for 6 years now and my feet are completely different and more capable, though it was a patient process to adapt and eventually start to run with a new strike pattern

More about feet

Growing up i didnt give a s**t about shoes or feet, I just want to look cool and socially acceptable. I wore the typical shoes, around 20 I was convinced that a hard athletic insert arch support was exactly what I needed. Some other issues were coming to a head around this time with my body but I had knee pain, plantar fascitis and just bad posture in general.

Losing the inserts and going barefoot was a stretch, but a great first start

I workout barefoot more, I dont even notice how bad my ankles are (2012)

2014 I experiment with flat shoes, vibrams, toe shoes etc. (it was cool!)

2016 I am introduced to xero shoes, lems, toe spacers and start incorporating them

2017 I have trained to tolerate toe spacers and foot shaped shoes all day, I become a xero affiliate

2019 I throw away every single of pair shoes I have except foot shaped xero shoes - becoming a fully dedicated brand w***e

2020 I get a pair of yeezys as a gift and I wear them for special occasions, i also start training to run toe striking in my xero shoes.

2022 i work with an olympic track team and they remark on my ‘nice calves’ and cant believe i can sprint in flats

Lots to learn about feet - sweet.

I get a lot of feet inspiration from ViPR foot print, Egoscue, Yoga ideas, Muscles and Meridians, and the general buzz of social media related to health. Changing my feet was not ever an outright decision but in a steady search for greater wellness I did change them A LOT, and it wasnt that hard it was just gradual and steady. If i had been thirsting for a goal maybe I would have tried to rush it and had another experience. I have trained myself to enjoy the process, so problems like that are uncommon.

SAID principle - think about it.

If your body moves with muscles, this is for you.

I have been using high-end stim for 7 years now alongside therapy and training and its got such a wide range of application, and offers the user so much potential. Purchasing one was a fantastic decision for my business, and improves MY recovery time massively to training, injury, etc., also great assistance with spine malfeasance.

A little on posture generally + a biohack

My amazon link has a selection of these, I get several cents each time so obviously i am lining my pockets heavily at your expense

I have been using these glasses at appropriate times for 6 or 7 years now - when i am having a bad cervical flare up ( 2 years ago now thank goodness) these are a lifesaver and allow me to do things like look down without straining my neck

Today were talking about your stance vs gait

Big potential problems, simple issue, simple solutions.

Try standing with your feet straight more often. Your stance is partially determinant in the function of your hips. You 'can' choose your stance, its not realistic to be perfect all the time.

Started focusing a lot on stance as part of VIPR training, its a main 'pillar'. Then more in yoga, and even more with Egoscue. Its ESSENTIAL in posture management.
