The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little- Jon Kabat-Zinn

Take a moment to notice any emotions, body sensations or thoughts that arise throughout your day—When you feel like you’ve lost a sense of your grounded self. Consider that moment being a door to unlock an opportunity for you to understand why you feel/think/do the things you do. It’s a doorway to understand all the other moments that came before, that led you to see the world and yourself as it is now.

Dr. Gordon Neufeld identifies four irreducible needs for human maturation. It is not schooling that teach children how to be mature. It is the child’s relational experiences that allow them to develop into maturity.

If you did not get these experiences as a child, you can still nurture and heal the younger parts of you that are stuck in time.

#1. Can you think of one person, animal, or a living being- fictional or nonfictional- where you can imagine yourself having a sense of safe contact and connection?

#2. In the presence of that being, can you feel like you can take a break from DOING to have them love and accept you? Can you feel a sense of love and acceptance just for you being you?

#3. Can you have acceptance towards uncomfortable feelings that arise inside of you? Can you allow anger, sadness, pain, grief to be there just as it is without needing to push them away or change them?

#4. Can you incorporate more agenda free play in your life?

We all have emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that feel impulsive and reactive. We long to have more control over them but we don't. We may have anger take over our reactions to our partners or children, and feel guilty afterwards. We may have sugar cravings convince us into ordering a large milkshake and feel ashamed after we finish the last sip.

The way we relate to these unpreferred symptoms don't help control them but it can add to us feeling even more distressed. Overtime, this can lead to low self-esteem and confidence in ourselves.

Instead of getting angry and shaming ourselves for having these symptoms, we can build a healthy relationship with them!

When we foster understanding of intentions behind our symptoms using mindfulness, we also foster self-compassion towards ourselves and others.

Take time to notice any uncomfortable feelings, thoughts, physical sensations or behaviors you might be experiencing in this moment.

With curiosity, can you sit with this part without judging?

Can you consider a positive intention it might have for you?

We all have different parts of us that have different needs and desires. Sometimes, it can become frustrating to be pulled in different directions and some parts just doesn’t seem helpful at all.

This morning, I had a part of me that wanted to sleep in, and another part of me that was critical and wanted to wake up and get stuff done.

When we tune into parts of us with mindfulness— a curious and nonjudgmental stance— we can get a deeper understanding that all of these parts actually are trying to help us in some way.

Is it possible to take some time today to connect with the critical part of you today and appreciate the positive intentions it may have for you?

In the book, Burnout, the Emily and Amelia shares these simple ways to complete a stress response, so it doesn’t get stuck in our nervous system!
Recently, I have had some of my long haul COVID symptoms come back— shortness of breath, increased heart rate, chills, etc. I’ve learned that with COVID, my body’s nervous system is way more sensitive and susceptible to turn into fight/flight stress response that leads to series of long haul symptoms. The other day when I was joking around and having a creative, positive, funny social interaction, I noticed that my body felt more relaxed and my breathing had gotten slower and easier. I was completing a stress response!
“To be ‘well’ is not to live in a perpetual state of safety and calm, but to move fluidly from a state  of adversity, risk, adventure, or excitement, back to safety and calm, and out again.” -E and A  Nagoski

Research shows that more than physical abuse/neglect or sexual abuse, children who experience high emotional abuse and/or neglect grow up to have higher rates in depression, anxiety, attachment avoidance and/or attachment anxiety. I’ve had clients share that nothing BIG has happened to them, but they still experience sense of inadequacy, insecurity and loneliness. As along as we had food, water, shelter and physical sense of safety, we often dismiss negative emotions derived from experiences we DIDN’T get, like emotional attunement from a comforting, nurturing adult. Is it possible to take a moment to tune into the emotions of your inner child during experiences where she/he/they didn’t receive the emotional attunement it was craving for? ALL humans have an emotional need to feel seen, heard, and valued 💕

Resmaa Menakem also states that time decontextualizes trauma. After time, trauma response can start to look like personalities and culture. The past very much still currently lives in the present through our bodies. Part of contexualizing trauma can start with tuning into mindfulness with your body and consider if your body responses are “clean” or “dirty.” Is it a clean response to what’s happening in the present? Or is the response dirty, tied with perhaps your own trauma or intergenerational trauma? 🤔

Attachment studies show significant improvement is emotion regulation and improved mental health when we have a FELT sense of connection with others. We are mammals and social beings—our brains are wired to connect and feel connected to others. The pandemic has led to unnatural ways for human beings to quarantine and isolate from others for the past year, leading to increase in depression, suicides, drug use, and other negative mental health crises. How are YOU staying connected with others during the pandemic? 👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏼🌎👫🏻

How do you approach your body sensations? I have been experiencing different long haul post-covid symptoms, and I’ve had so much fear towards my new body sensations. Yesterday, the doctor actually diagnosed one of my symptoms and was able to explain why my throat was swelling up and I was having difficulty breathing. When I realized that my body is just responding to a traumatic event, and is trying to do what it thinks it needs to do to heal, I started to approach my throat swelling with more curiosity and less fear.
