For the Ones Who Ache on Mother’s Day -
we want to be a soft place to land ❤️

Mother’s Day can be beautiful.
And for a lot of people… it can also be incredibly hard.

This Sunday evening, we’re opening Safe in Austin for a very gentle sunset gathering for the people who feel a little heavy on Mother’s Day.

Maybe you’ve lost your mom.
Maybe you never had the kind of mother you deserved.
Maybe you miss your children.
Maybe becoming a mother hasn’t happened the way you hoped.
Maybe family relationships are complicated.
Maybe holidays just hurt.

Whatever the reason… you are not alone in feeling it. So many of us, and so many of our animals, understand.

We’ll have snacks, drinks, the animals, a simple healing activity, and a quiet evening together as the sun sets over the sanctuary.

No pressure.
No forced positivity.
No need to explain your story.

Just a soft place to land for anyone who needs somewhere to be.

Shaggy, aka Tiny Tim, as we flew over Stafford, VA, on his way to rescue. On this day, he and 5 others would make it home for the holidays.

There’s something quietly magical about this moment; below us, is everything and nothing at once—land fading into distance, worries left somewhere far behind.

A new dawn of sorts, a new beginning awaits. Soon, he and his pawsengers, like many before him, would know the true meaning of going from death row to rescue ❤🐕

Today, our shelter doors opened for a one-year-old German Shepherd boy who walked in quietly and sat down as if he already knew his life was about to change. 🐕‍🦺

He didn’t bark.
He didn’t pull.

He just tilted his head and looked up at us with soft, uncertain eyes — trying to understand where he was and why the people he trusted weren’t beside him anymore.

When we gently asked his former owner why she was surrendering him, her words hit us hard.

She said,
“I didn’t realize how much work a German Shepherd would be. People say they’re intense, protective, and too much for a family with young kids. I got scared.”

And just like that, this sweet boy was left behind — not because of anything he did, but because of what people assume about his breed.

What we saw told a very different story.

We saw a gentle soul.
A young Shepherd who sat politely instead of panicking.
A soft head tilt every time someone spoke kindly to him.
A dog who moved slowly and carefully, hoping — just hoping — that kindness still existed. 🤍

We wrapped him in a warm blanket, gave him a full bowl, and sat with him on the floor.
At first, his tail barely moved.
Then it wagged.
Slowly… then happily. 🐾

As if he was starting to believe that maybe this place wasn’t the end of his story.

And it wasn’t.

Later that same afternoon, a couple walked into the shelter looking for a dog.
They said they wanted someone calm, affectionate, and loyal —
“a dog who just wants to be close.”

They sat down beside him.
He leaned into their hands without hesitation, rested his head against their legs, and let out the deepest sigh — like he finally felt safe. 💞

They looked at each other and smiled.

They didn’t ask about labels.
They didn’t ask about stereotypes.
They didn’t fear his breed.

They adopted him on the spot.

Tonight, this one-year-old German Shepherd isn’t sleeping behind kennel bars.
He’s curled up on a soft bed.
In a quiet home.
With people who chose him for his heart — not his breed, not his past, not the fear tied to his name.

He didn’t lose a home today.
He found the right one.
