We all scream for ice cream! The end of summer is approaching fast, and OOTKS celebrated the transition to fall by having an ice cream truck come visit us at South! Providing enrichment and positive experiences to our students is so important to us, not to mention the opportunity to practice social skills! Each of our children was guided by their RBT to choose an option from the menu, and order on their own. Some of our children communicate verbally, and some with an AAC- but we are committed to ensuring ALL of our students get the same opportunities for learning. Being able to order food, talk with cashiers and select options off of a menu are social skills that most people don't think about as something you need to practice. But anyone with social anxiety or other impairments can tell you, it's not that simple! Allowing our kiddos to experience and practice those skills in a safe environment is essential to them using those skills outside of our clinic walls. Not to mention, the sweet treat definitely made our children AND staff's week!

Last week, our wonderful students enjoyed One of the Kids' first field trip to the Thinkery! Each student was guided by their own RBT, who assisted them in engaging with the exhibits and managing behavior throughout the visit. Our children explored sensory-rich rooms that encouraged them to use all their senses, keeping them engaged.
The reality of raising a child with Autism can sometimes mean seeing your child miss out on community outings or social activities within school or other groups. At One of the Kids, inclusion and community experience are SO important for our students' happiness and development. We want to provide them with every opportunity to explore and play. Field trips are valuable in terms of a child's development. It offers the chance to experience hands-on learning, reinforces skills learned in the clinic, deepens curiosity, and encourages social development. We are so grateful to have been able to give our children this enriching and fun experience.
Our students were not the only ones who had the opportunity to learn new things! This experience has profoundly impacted our RBTs, providing them with valuable insights into the daily lives of our students' caretakers. This deeper understanding and respect for our fantastic group of parents has inspired our RBTs to continue their dedicated work. We sincerely thank the Thinkery and the parents who made this trip possible.

We are thrilled to announce that enrollment is now open for the Fall 2024 pilot program at One of the Kids Academy, a non-profit private school dedicated to providing exceptional education for children of all abilities. Finding suitable education for our precious children can be challenging. Our children require adequate support, patience, and consistency to thrive and learn. At One of the Kids Academy, we address the individualized needs of our learners, no matter what level they are at.
The Academy serves children from Kindergarten to 3rd grade, with or without disabilities, using leveled classrooms and personalized support. With a maximum class size of 10 students, we ensure each child receives the attention needed to learn effectively. Unlike traditional classrooms, where all students follow the same curriculum, our approach allows for individualized assessments and a customized lesson plan that meets the needs of each individual student.
For students with an autism diagnosis, we offer ABA school shadows to provide individualized support throughout the school day. Additionally, our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) oversee behavior support plans for all students, ensuring that our classroom strategies are consistent, personalized, and adaptable as our students grow.

Wishing everyone a happy start to the summer! As things are heating up outside, One of the Kids is beating the heat during our swim and water days. Take a look at the adorable pictures our therapists have captured of our sweet children having fun in the sun!
Water play is such a wonderful way for our children to step out of their comfort zones in a safe and relaxing environment. It's also a great way for children to expand their sensory diets! Water play provides visual and tactile stimulation, encouraging exploration and curiosity within our young learners.
Our water days encourage our children to be flexible with others, taking turns sharing items or the best spot on the splash pad. It also sets up novel social opportunities- everyone loves a good water balloon fight! Pairing such goals and expectations with delightful activities makes these transitions and sometimes challenging tasks much easier.

Digging into a world of wonder over at South Austin! This week, our classroom program students put on their green thumbs and got to work, starting our spring garden. Did you know that gardening and ABA have a lot in common? Both require patience, consistency and perseverance- even when we are in the weeds.
While planting, we broke down the process into multiple steps, encouraging the development of fine and gross motor skills. It takes a lot more precision to re pot plants than you would think! Our therapists assisted our kiddos in carefully scooping dirt into the planters, pushing the new plants into the ground and gently covering them with dirt.
Planting our spring garden not only provides our students with a fun spring activity, but also works to instill personal responsibility skills. Every day, our students will check on their plants- making sure they are watered and weeded. Plant journals will be used to record observations about our plants and how they grow, we even hope to see a tomato or two in the summer!

This past week, our Cedar Park and South Austin locations both hosted the annual Egg Hunt! We had an absolute blast watching our little ones search for eggs and fill their baskets. At One of the Kids, we prioritize creating a welcoming, safe, and enriching environment for our learners through fun and engaging activities.
Egg hunts are a cherished tradition of springtime, and our goal is to familiarize our children with these traditions, fostering community engagement and family bonding. Building up familial relationships is so important when considering all that it takes to ensure growth and happiness within our learners and their families. Of course, it is just as fun for us to watch the joy as well. We wish for a lovely spring season for all and thanks for taking a peek at what it is like to be One of the Kids!

This week in South Austin, we hosted our first-ever Social Skills group! It was such a joy to see our little students meet new friends, build connections, and practice important skills together. We focused on friendship this week—talking about what it means, the challenges, and the excitement of forming bonds with others.
The concept of "How to be a Good Friend" isn't something they teach in schools explicitly. It's more a set of unwritten rules that most kids pick up along the way, through school and extracurricular activities. But for some children, like those with autism or who went through the Covid-19 lockdown, these skills might not come as naturally. That's why we're here—to create a safe space where they can learn and practice these skills in a supportive environment.
From painting projects to fun board games and even bug hunts, our students not only had a blast but also learned some valuable lessons. They discovered the importance of compromise, speaking up for themselves, active listening, and knowing when to set boundaries. Our hope is that these lessons stick with them, making their days at school and in the community more fulfilling with friends by their side.

The Holidays have arrived! See how we have been spreading the holiday cheer at OOTKS! Our staff and children joined in the festive spirit with Spirit Days, dressed up, met Santa, and enjoyed delicious holiday treats. Take a peek at our adorable little reindeer, Grinches, and Christmas trees that stopped by!
While the holidays can be stressful for many families, we aim to create a playful and joyous environment for our children, bringing uplifting spirits to the families we serve. Celebrating also helps us foster happy, relaxed, and engaged environments for our learners. This past week, the classroom program at South Austin explored different holidays around the world and participated in holiday themed activities. Cedar Park saw some master engineers building and decorating their own mini-gingerbread houses- honing those fine motor skills. Santa also paid a visit to our little elves, and we captured some precious moments. Our wonderful employees had their share of fun as well at our annual Holiday Party! Some healthy competition, laughter and bonding is a great way to finish off our year. Wishing everyone a very merry Holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Featuring South Austin: In this week's Classroom Program, the learners from South Austin had the chance to delve into the fascinating world of finances! We covered coin counting, navigating purchases, and the essentials of saving. Our play pretend grocery store offered opportunities for clients to engage in play while honing practical life skills crucial for a trip to the store. This educational approach, known as Natural Environment Training (NET), plays a major part in how OOTKS creates individualized learning opportunities for our students.
NET centers around instructing through play in environments that align with our children's preferences or are commonly encountered. Within our classroom program, NET exposes children to scenarios that foster growth and skill development. For instance, our pretend grocery store experience enabled students to master functional skills essential for navigating a real one—selecting items, queuing up, handling coins, and interacting appropriately with the "store clerk". Within the concept of NET, reinforcement for completing programs occurs naturally, in this case through the “purchased” item or through engaging social interaction that was experienced during the pretend play.
Prioritizing NET aligns with OOTKS's dedication to delivering high-quality care, recognizing that learning extends beyond the confines of a traditional desk setting. Ensuring our students' happiness, relaxation, and engagement across all environments is important. By incorporating NET, our therapists introduce our learners to activities and settings that make them happy- creating not only an engaging and comfortable atmosphere but also one filled with joy for our students.

Experience the difference at One of the Kids (OOTKS), where we prioritize the sensory well-being of our young learners. Sensory processing and regulation are crucial aspects of life that many autistic children struggle with. Loud noises, crowded rooms and bright lights can cause overstimulation and negative experiences in their environment. That's why we've carefully crafted both our Cedar Park and South Austin locations with "Sensory Wellbeing Design" in mind.
From our open floor plan to textural choices and decor, we put our learners' wellbeing at the forefront of our compassionate approach to ABA through our “Sensory Wellbeing Design”. Using intentional architecture, our open floor plan allows comfortable movement without feeling cramped or enclosed. For our autistic learners that prefer enclosed spaces to regulate; small side rooms are available to cool down, work or simply relax.
Natural light floods the interior, and the decor mimics naturalistic scenes, with green accents and abstract mountain landscaping throughout both locations. We've also created an outdoor playground that caters to our sensory-seeking friends, offering various types of swings, ample space for biking and scootering, slides, and even an outdoor pool. Schedule a tour with us today to see how we are bringing "A Better way for ABA" to Austin, TX.
