First Aid Friday

Monica, Joey, and Chandler had it wrong. 😂 First aid treatment for jellyfish stings is to rinse the injured area in vinegar for at least 30 seconds. If vinegar is not available, use a baking soda/water solution. Next, put the part of the body that was stung in hot water or take a hot shower for approximately 20 minutes!

The CPR Gender Difference: Men vs. Women.

According to a study released by the Resuscitation Science Symposium, men are more likely to receive bystander CPR in public locations compared to women.

Women and men receive similar CPR assistance within the home, but in public 45 percent of men received assistance compared to only 39 percent of women. Men were 1.23 times more likely to receive bystander CPR in public, and their chance of survival was 23 percent higher compared to women.

So why the discrepancy? It could come down to anatomy and a bystander being comfortable enough to perform CPR on a woman.

If I need CPR, please don't let anatomy get in the way for me or any other woman.

Do you know where the AED is located at your place of employment?

There are about 10,000 cardiac arrests in the workplace each year in the United States, according to a report from the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration, and only 50% of people can locate an automated external defibrillator (AED) at work?

If you don't know where the AED is, look for it tomorrow!

Remember, today is always a good day to save a life (and an AED helps)!

Why does the American Heart Association recommend 100-120 chest compressions per minute?

Compression rates below 100 CPM reduce blood flow to the brain and heart, while rates above 120 CPM impair the heart's ability to refill with blood which also decreases blood flow!

Here are some additional songs that have the correct beats per minute to achieve 100-120 compressions per minute! Enjoy!

First Aid Friday

Do you know the best way to preserve a knocked out tooth?

Approximately five million teeth are knocked out a year especially through participation in youth sports.

According to the American Heart Association, first aid for tooth injury includes:
1. Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root)
2. Rinse with water if dirty
3. Place in cow's milk
4. Immediately seek help at the emergency room or dentist.

Cow's milk has vital proteins and sugars that make it a good choice in a dental emergency.

What do Jennifer Lawrence and Ryan Reynolds have in common?

They have both performed CPR to save a life. Ryan Reynolds saved the life of his nephew and Jennifer Lawrence saved a jogger that collapsed in front of her.

Saving a life doesn't require you to be famous or play a superhero in the movies, it only requires approximately 2 - 3 hours of your time and you can be a real life hero!

Poison Control Center 1-800-222-1222

I recently taught a CPR/AED/First Aid class to a sweet family whose daughter was hoping to babysit more in the future. When covering the topic of poisoning, the daughter's father put the Poison Control Center Number in her cell phone. I thought that was extremely smart so posting here for anyone else that would like to do the same!

Have you ever seen CPR performed well on TV? If so, what show?

Often times, I will see actors on some of my favorite TV shows administering CPR. Unfortunately, I am almost always frustrated because what is being shown is not high quality CPR with most of the basic skills such as positioning, compression rate, chest depth, and rescue breathing not being demonstrated properly.

Bob Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University in New York stated "I've seen a lot of CPR, but I certainly don't feel like what I learned qualified me to do it, any more than I've watched people deliver a baby hundreds of times and don't know more than to say, 'Breathe! One more push!'"

I'm not suggesting we all learn how to deliver babies, but I am suggesting spending 2 - 3 hours to learn how to perform high quality CPR because today is always a good day to save a life!
