Today we're celebrating the 147th birthday of Charlie, our skeletal "interim receptionist" whose ghostly presence greets visitors to our Austin office. He didn't eat much cake, but that didn't dampen the festive mood. Charlie's name tag proudly notes that he's been "TPA Staff Since 1879," which is when 18 met in the back room of a Dallas drug store and formed what was then known as the Texas State Pharmaceutical Association. Thank you to everyone who is a TPA member nearly 150 years later!

🎉 The Patients Before Monopolies Act was reintroduced today in both chambers of Congress — and NCPA is proud to endorse it! This bill aims squarely at the conflicts of interest created by vertically integrated PBMs by prohibiting a parent company from owning both a PBM/health insurer and a pharmacy; requiring divestiture of pharmacy assets within one year; establishing strong enforcement; enabling private right of action; and preventing re-consolidation that would recreate the same anticompetitive structure.

“PBMs have a choice — operate as a PBM or operate as a pharmacy, but you can’t have it both ways. Having both functions under one roof is a huge conflict of interest and drives up prescription drug prices," said NCPA CEO Douglas Hoey. Read the rest of his statement: https://bit.ly/4dD4MiZ

"No business can survive losing money every time somebody walks through the door." That includes a , as Suzanne Bellsnyder writes today at the Texas Rural Reporter. "Some rural counties no longer have a pharmacy at all. Others are hanging on by a thread. And the reason is pretty simple: many independent pharmacies are being paid less to fill prescriptions than what it actually costs to put the medicine in the bottle. ... When the pharmacy closes, people don’t just lose convenience. They lose access."

It's safe to say that nobody has an "interim receptionist" quite like our Charlie. That's why we salute him on this !

The San Antonio Express-News shared the story of TPA member and Crystal McEntire, who relies on cattle ranching to keep her rural independent afloat to care for her underserved patients in the Texas panhandle and keep the area from becoming a pharmacy desert. This excellent article shines the light on the need for additional . RoxAnn Dominguez, CEO of the Texas Pharmacy Association, said state and federal lawmakers need to pass laws preventing PBMs from underpaying pharmacists and increasing PBM reimbursement rate transparency.

Independent rural pharmacists are starting other businesses or selling baby shower gifts to keep their stores operating. Pharmacy deserts affect 4 million Texans.
