Did you know that when your body lacks sleep, the immune system’s ability to do its job and protect against pathogens gets compromised?

It's true! Studies have found that adults who slept less than six hours a night are four times more likely to get a cold than adults who slept more than seven hours! Good sleep hygiene is a must for optimal rest and health – avoid all screens, alcohol and coffee, and heavy, fatty meals before bedtime.

Eating a well-balanced and nutrient-dense diet is one of the best things you can do to prevent illnesses. Here are 3 of my top immune supportive foods to include this fall:

Bone broth: Bone broth supports good gut health, which studies have shown contributes to the strength of your immune system. In fact, around 70–80% of immune cells are present in the gut!
Ginger: Ginger has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for its immune-supporting properties. Its warming effect is believed to help break down toxins in the body.
Vitamin-C rich foods: Citrus fruits, broccoli, red bell peppers and all other vitamin C rich foods have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that strengthen the immune system. Vitamin C supports the function of various immune cells and augments their ability to fight infections.

Fall is here! That means your immune system will need to kick it into overdrive to keep you healthy!

Studies have found that people who are poorly nourished have a greater risk of catching viral, bacterial, and other infections. Certain nutrients are essential to the immune system – they work as antioxidants to protect healthy cells, support the growth and activity of immune cells, and produce antibodies. Vitamin D, zinc, probiotics are just a few of the nutrients your immune system thrives on.

It’s not always possible to meet your body’s needs through diet alone. And when it comes to hormone balance, carefully selected and high-quality nutraceuticals can help ensure your body is receiving what it needs. Some effective herbs and nutrients for hormonal balance include:

✨ Vitamin D: Many people in North America experience low levels of vitamin D, which plays an essential role in balancing estrogen and progesterone, as well as helping to stabilize insulin levels.
✨ Evening primrose oil: This is particularly effective in regulating hormones that contribute to premenstrual or menopausal symptoms.
✨ Probiotics: Probiotic supplements can help maintain a good balance of bacteria in the gut, necessary for healthy hormone balance.
✨ Ashwagandha: This adaptogenic herb helps control the stress hormone cortisol, as well as maintain insulin levels. It can also boost testosterone production.
✨ Holy basil: Another adaptogenic herb, holy basil is particularly effective in balancing stress hormones.
✨ Functional mushrooms: Functional mushrooms like Chaga, lion's mane, and turkey tail can help your body’s response to stress, among other benefits, which helps hormone balance.

Did you know that your diet can have a profound impact on your mental health?

Exciting research is currently underway, focusing on the connection between fermented foods and brain function. Preliminary findings have revealed that fermented foods, rich in tryptophan and other beneficial compounds, show great potential in supporting brain health.

Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, and kombucha are packed with essential amino acids and neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, known to influence mood and overall brain function. Eating fermented foods may even help reduce stress levels, according to the initial data.

Are you a bacon-lover???

Flip over your pack of bacon and you're likely going to see nitrates listed in the ingredients panel. Nitrates are chemical compounds commonly used as preservatives in processed meats, such as bacon, sausages, and deli meats.

While they help extend shelf life and prevent bacterial growth, it's essential to be aware of the potential risks associated with these additives. Nitrates can convert into harmful substances called nitrosamines. These nitrosamines have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, including stomach and colorectal cancer. 🥓🚫

To reduce your exposure to nitrates, opt for fresh, whole foods in your diet. Stick to fresh grass-fed beef, organic, free-roaming chicken, and wild-caught fish as much as possible. Minimize processed meats in your diet and choose nitrate free when necessary.

Your well-being relies on a complex balance of many hormones, including testosterone, estrogen, adrenaline, insulin, and thyroid hormone. ✨

Each of these hormones plays an important role in supporting your body’s functions, but even a slight imbalance in hormone levels can wreak havoc - often in unexpected ways.

A natural approach to hormonal balance involves taking a close look at all facets of your lifestyle. The activities you perform, the attitude you have, and the things you consume all impact hormonal levels.
