Schema Spotlight #4: Enclosing 🔵

Ever notice a child carefully building walls around blocks? Drawing circles around stickers? Crawling into a cardboard box and closing the lid? They might be exploring the Enclosing Schema — one of the many ways children make sense of the world through play!💙

✔Try This Idea:
“Circle It!” Tray: Set out dot stickers, shapes, or buttons and invite children to use string, yarn, pipe cleaners, or Wikki Stix to enclose them. You can even use painter’s tape on a tray or the floor to create little “homes” for each item!

Parenting Styles 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Authoritarian — very strict; “my way or the highway.”
• “No arguing—you’re grounded for a week.”

Authoritative — warm but firm; clear rules + reasons.
• “Curfew is 9; let’s plan how you’ll get home safely.”

Permissive (Indulgent) — very lenient; few rules.
• “If you don’t want homework today, that’s okay.”

Uninvolved (Neglectful) — low warmth and low guidance.
• “Do whatever—you’ll figure it out.”

Helicopter parent — hovers over every detail.
• “I’ll email your teacher about that B right now.”

Lawnmower / Snowplow parent — removes obstacles for the child.
• “I spoke to the coach so you won’t have tryouts.”

Tiger parent — extremely high expectations and discipline.
• “Practice piano two hours before you can play.”

Free-range parent — prioritizes independence and self-reliance.
• “Bike to your friend’s—text me when you arrive.”

Gentle / Attachment parent — empathy-first; low punishment.
• “You’re upset—let’s breathe and talk it through.”

Ever wondered what’s happening inside your child’s brain when anxiety takes over?

It’s not just 'worrying too much' – the brain is flooded with cortisol and adrenaline, preparing the body for fight, flight or freeze.

This rush of stress chemicals explains the racing heart, the shaky hands, the tummy aches, the sudden anger or tears. It’s biology, not bad behaviour.

When we understand the science behind anxiety, we can respond with empathy instead of frustration.

Post derived from
MY PROTECTIVE BRAIN in our Resource Store

Seven page activity to educate around the role of the brain, in particular the amygdala. Pack includes when the amygdala sets off the alarm, the changes in the body, explanation of the survival instinct (fight, flight, freeze and fawn) and activity to educate the individual child around their own response. Compliments our emotions based interventions.

I've referenced this pyramid of learning many times! And it's been recently updated to include the interoception system.
