We are often taught to support others even when we are not on solid ground. Should this be an actual emergency, it may be appropriate. But often times, what we are saying when we offer to carry someone, knowing our legs will never hold is “I will probably drop you, but I won’t tell you that.” And honestly, I would so much rather seek out another resource than allow someone I care about to grit their teeth and oblige helping me when they are wondering how on earth they will keep from unraveling one more day already. And then I can seek out someone who actually has the capacity in that moment to support me. Then finally, when my s**t show is over, I can help with others’ dumpster fires.
