Did you know that babies are born almost colorblind? To detect color, the stimulus has to be very bright, highly saturated, and fairly large. Research shows that the red–green color system develops first, followed by the blue–yellow system about 4–8 weeks later. By around three months, infants become fully trichromatic. Even then, their ability to see less saturated, subtle colors is still limited—adult‑level color sensitivity doesn’t develop until late adolescence.

Did you know? In 2024, the CDC reported that kids ages 8–10 averaged 6 hours of screen time a day, ages 11–14 averaged 9 hours, and ages 15–18 averaged 7.5 hours — not including schoolwork! 🫨💻
High screen time is linked with increased anxiety, depression, obesity, and lower social‑skills development. Recommended limits are:

0–2 years: none

2–5 years: 1 hour, co‑viewed

5–17 years: 2 hours or less

Open conversations and clear boundaries help kids build healthy habits. Encourage hobbies and activities that spark movement, creativity, and positive social interaction. ☀️

Bones play an important role behind the scenes in keeping children strong and healthy. Having strong bones in childhood helps set the foundation for better bone health in the future. We build most of our bone density during childhood and the teen years, and most people stop building bone around age 20. As we grow older, bones naturally become weaker over time. Parents can help kids build the strongest bones possible by making sure they get enough calcium, vitamin D, and regular exercise.

What happens at a well‑child visit? 🩺

Physical Exams: These exams help monitor growth and development and identify potential health issues early. They may include measuring height and weight, listening to the lungs, checking heart rate and oxygen levels, taking blood pressure, and examining the eyes, ears, and throat. Your healthcare provider will also administer any scheduled immunizations at this time. 🥼

Keeping your child’s ears healthy starts with good habits. Teach them not to put objects—like cotton swabs or fingers—into their ears, since this can push wax deeper or even damage the eardrum. Loud music, TV, and games can also cause permanent hearing loss, so encourage safe volume levels and use earplugs in noisy places. Protecting hearing early makes a big difference later in life. Stay safe!

Healthy social connections are important from infancy! They promote lifelong wellness, both physically and emotionally. They also have shown to improve brain development in young children and relieve stress, anxiety, and build empathy in older kids. To help facilitate your child’s social connections, you can plan playdates, encourage your child to make new friends, and model healthy friendships yourself! 😊

Washing Hands Guide! 🫧
Making sure your child washes their hands thoroughly is an important step towards building their healthy habits and keeping them safe from germs and viruses. Many illnesses are spread through hand-to-face contact; so it is important that your child learns this vital sanitation skill. Printing out a guide, like this one, and hanging it near the sink can help your child remember every step. We recommend singing a song, like the ABCs, to ensure the 20 seconds are met and to make it a more enjoyable process for your child! 🎶🧼
