This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Alexa Irene Canady, the first African American woman neurosurgeon in the United States.
Dr. Canady's journey wasn’t always easy—she nearly dropped out of college as an undergraduate. But she regained her confidence and went on to break barriers in medicine. For 14 years, Dr. Canaday served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. In her time there, she was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame, named Teacher of the Year, and received two honorary degrees.
