Michigan Traveling Military Museum

Michigan Traveling Military Museum The weapons used. The uniforms worn. The letters written. Each piece of memorabilia in the MTMM holds a story of the individual who used it.

The Michigan Traveling Military Museum is a mobile military history exhibit instead of the more traditional fixed, brick-and-mortar establishment. This format allows us to reach more people in different regions than a traditional fixed location would. The primary purpose of the MTMM is to use original military memorabilia and historic relics to help educate Americans both young and old about the sacrifices made by our military men and women throughout our country’s history. We are different from most museums in that we actually purchase military items for our display instead of relying on the traditional donation method. The MTMM is staffed by a group of dedicated collectors/historians and volunteers who are happy to give their time to help make our museum a success.

Williamsport Pennsylvania resident, Paul B. Free, entered active military service in August of 1939 as a member of the US Army Air Corps. He became a member of the 72nd Pursuit Squadron stationed at Wheeler Field in Honolulu Hawaii. On the morning of December 7th, 1941, Staff Sergeant Paul Free was killed in action when the Imperial Japanese air force attacked Wheeler Field as the first of its targets on that fateful morning. A witness to the attack, Tech. Sgt. Bill Temple recalls being in bed on the second floor of his barracks when he was awakened by the sounds of planes flying overhead. He opened his door and stepped onto a porch and saw a Japanese plane fly directly by. He was so close he could see the face of the enemy pilot. The planes were bombing the airfield and as he ran downstairs he heard a bomb explode close by. As he exited the building he saw the bodies of a number of servicemen including his good friend Paul Free laying on the street. Our museum is proud to have S/Sgt. Paul Frees KIA purple heart medal and other artifacts in our museum collection. Please like and share our post and visit our website at https://mtmm.us to view more interesting relics and the stories that accompany them.

Here is the license plate given to me by Norman Frederick of Bay City MI. He was on the USS Phoenix that morning. The ship was off by itself in the corner of the harbor and did not suffer damages. There is a photo of the USS Phoenix passing the burning USS Arizona as it was leaving Pearl Harbor. Mr Frederick was one of two men there that morning from Bay City. I was privileged to met Mr Frederick about two weeks before he moved from Michigan.

This is Commander. F. W. O'Connor's Cover (hat) and photo of him after the war. He was on the USS Argonne (AS-10) that day. The ship was docked across from Battle Ship row that morning.

Hello out there hope everyone is well. The anniversary of Pearl Harbor is coming up, so I am going to post a few things I have of survivors from that day. Some items are from people I have met and other items I have picked up over the years. The first item is of James Jones from Detroit. He was on the USS Pennsylvania that day and i have some telegrams. One saying that they don't know yet if he was alive and the other ones saying he is safe he did survive the war.
