Congratulations to our patient Anita, who was awarded the Joslin Diabetes Center 50-Year Bronze Medal. She has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 52 years.
“1989 was the first time I came to Retina Associates of Cleveland, and I saw Dr. Singerman,” said Anita. “I was referred by my family doctor who saw little spots in my eyes. Dr. Singerman said, ‘We’ll just keep an eye on it. You have mild retinopathy.’ I get my eyes checked every year, and nothing has changed."
When Anita was first diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, she participated in two clinical trials. One was for the insulin drip. She was in the hospital for 10 days getting her blood monitored, and given set meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The second one was two weeks later where she had to carry a computerized box that provided a steady stream of insulin. Six months later, she went on insulin injections.
Anita started to see Dr. Coney in 2021. In 2023, she had this floater in her eye, and went through the testing to see if she needed surgery. Dr. Coney said it didn’t look that bad and advised against laser or injections.
“It’s amazing you’ve had Type 1 Diabetes for this long, and your eyes look pretty good,” commented Dr. Coney. “You know you get a medal at 50 years.”
He then encouraged Anita to apply for the Joslin Diabetes Center 50-year medal, then bring it in for her next appointment. That’s how this sweet moment was captured.
“I always thought I’d be dead by 60. I thought diabetes would kill me,” explained Anita. “Thank God I’m living in an age where things are changing, and with things that didn’t exist before. I thank God that I still have my vision, and for Dr. Coney. He’s very good with patients."
“I continue to watch my sugars and do the best I can,” continued Anita. “This practice is the best really.”
Anita we thank you for sharing your story with us. You are a true inspiration, and we are truly proud of you for managing your diabetes so well!
