Did you know cavities are contagious? Cavities are caused by bacteria (like Streptococcus mutans) that can be passed from person to person through saliva. That means they can spread through everyday acts of affection and sharing, such as:
- Kissing
- Sharing straws or drinks
- Sharing utensils
- Cleaning a pacifier with your mouth before giving it to a child

Once these bacteria are passed along, they can settle in the mouth and increase the risk for cavities—especially in children and anyone with dry mouth or weakened enamel.

How to protect the smiles you love:
- Brush twice a day for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily to remove bacteria between teeth
- Avoid sharing utensils, drinks, or toothbrushes
- Keep up with regular dental checkups and cleanings
- Parents and caregivers: maintaining your oral health helps protect your child’s teeth too

Good oral health isn’t just personal—it’s something we share. Taking care of your mouth helps protect the people closest to you.

DPH is reporting a measles exposure at the Nemours Children’s Hospital emergency department in Wilmington on February 18, 2026. Contact tracing is ongoing and DPH will be contacting persons who were identified as exposed to confirm whether or not they have been vaccinated against measles before, provide educational resources and recommend quarantine and exclusion orders when necessary. DPH is encouraging people who were exposed to check their vaccination status and watch for symptoms for 21 days until March 11, 2026.

Pregnant women who may have been exposed during this time period should go to an emergency room for assessment and treatment. Any individual who was exposed to measles, and is not fully vaccinated against measles, should get a dose of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine within 72 hours of exposure to someone with measles (by February 21, 2026). Vaccination may be available at facilities like pharmacies and primary care providers. Call your preferred facility to assure they have the MMR vaccine and are available to administer it.

If you are showing symptoms, contact the Office of Infectious Disease Epidemiology during regular business hours (302-744-4990) or the 24-hour reporting line at 1-888-295-5156 outside of normal business hours to coordinate testing, receive guidance, and limit exposures. Those who are ill should seek immediate health care by contacting their doctor. If symptoms are severe, they should seek immediate care at the nearest emergency department. Before going to any health care facility, the individual should notify providers and medical transport that they or their child were exposed to measles. Health care providers who identify any potential measles case should contact OIDE.

If you are unsure of your vaccination status, visit https://delvaxpublicportal.dhss.delaware.gov/ and view their personal profile. Individuals may also contact their primary health care provider for additional details or if they are unable to obtain their records on DelVAX. Preventive screenings can help find health problems early, before they become serious. These exams can include yearly checkups, blood pressure checks, cancer screenings, and more. Getting screened early can help you stay healthy and avoid bigger problems later.

Try to schedule your preventive care at the beginning of the year so you don’t feel rushed at the end. Staying on schedule makes it easier to take care of your health.
