Southeast Texas Paws 4 Love - Therapy Animals

Southeast Texas Paws 4 Love - Therapy Animals Take this quiz to find out your suitability as a visiting team: http://humananimalsolutions.com/wp-c

People with pets know they offer a form of unconditional love that never wavers. Nearly every person with a pet has a special story of how an animal touched their life, or helped them cope with a serious issue. Research has shown that when animals are around, people's stress and anxiety levels are reduced, their blood pressure goes down, they feel less lonely and less
depressed, and they tend to be more social. Our volunteers graciously share the healing power of their dogs with those in need. We visit hospitals, nursing homes, hospice homes, schools, rehabilitation centers, and other facilities.

On behalf of SETX Paws 4 Love, we wanted to wish the amazing Vicki Holcombe a Happy Retirement. We are thankful for all she has done over the years for our teams. Our visits to the hospital will not be the same without her. Thank you Vicki for advocating for our pups, for helping us visit as many places as we could for allowing us to bring smiles to patients, families and staff. Vicki, you have left footprint on all of our hearts. We are forever grateful for you. Visits to the hospital will not be the same without seeing your smiling face before and after each visit. Enjoy your retirement, we hope you will think about adding a dog to your family soon and joining us as a pet therapy team.

We have ONE spot left in our upcoming workshop, please see all the details below. If you are interested in participating, please send a message to our page with your email address and we will email you the brochure.

Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, TX will be hosting a workshop for our organization for prospective therapy dog handlers on July 15. We will hold evaluations on July 29. The workshop is required for all new handlers. We have approximately 3 openings left in this workshop and evaluation.

If you are interested in becoming a therapy dog team with our organization, please send us a message and include your email address and we will send you the registration form. Please note a therapy dog is not a service/assistance or emotional support dog. Therapy dogs volunteer with you in the community, they do not have access to public places such as restaurants/stores, they cannot travel with you in the cabin of an airplane. Therapy animals bring smiles to people in nursing homes, hospitals, and other events in the community.

To become a therapy dog team, your dog must know basic obedience and pass our therapy dog evaluation. Your dog must be good around other dogs and people. The dog may NOT be a service, assistance, or emotional support dog, this is per our national organization. The dog must not have been trained to do bite work of any kind.

Your dog must be at least 2 years old and under 10 years of age to qualify for the evaluation. Additionally, if you have rescued/adopted your dog, it must have lived with you for a minimum of six months before you may evaluate as a team.

We will NOT evaluate dogs to work with you in your classrooms, practices, or other facilities. Our national organization only covers work you are doing when volunteering and only covers a maximum of 2 hours of visiting per day. Our insurance only covers you while volunteering with your animal and not while you are at work.

For this workshop, we are ONLY evaluating teams who are willing to volunteer at least 1-2 times per month at Baptist Hospital. You of course may volunteer in other facilities. However, to become a volunteer at Baptist Hospital you are required to complete a background check, volunteer orientations, and show proof yearly of a flu shot and a recent TB test (your TB test, flu shot are all covered if you do not have them). New volunteers will also complete shadowing at the hospital as well as complete annual volunteer education.

To test as a therapy dog, you must attend the workshop, your dog must be up to date on vaccines and will require a health check and vet forms completed by the time of your evaluation. You will also be required to complete an application and bring it to your evaluation. Your evaluation will consist of basic obedience and a simulated visit, both you and your dog will be evaluated. Your dog must be friendly and enthusiastic about meeting new people, be predictable and reliable and inspire confidence in the person they are interacting with. Your dog should be people oriented, enjoy being hugged, be comfortable around loud noises, be relaxed, not growl, jump up on people or bark. Dogs should be living inside with you and your family, outside only dogs do not typically make good therapy animals.

There is a cost for the workshop, evaluation and for your two year certification, but the benefits of sharing your animal with others do far outweigh the costs.

We ONLY have a limited number of spots available for this workshop. If you are interested in participating and you agree to the terms listed here, please send us a message with your name, dog’s name and age, and your email address and we will send you the form. You are not considered registered for the workshop until payment is received. The deadline to submit payment is July 7. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. You will receive confirmation from the hospital once your form and payment have been received. You will NOT bring your dog with you to the workshop.

This a post for our handlers but our followers might be interested as well. I was telling our hospital volunteers about biothane collars and leashes because they are easily cleaned and disinfected. I just got this martingale leash for Chili and I love it. It super soft and supple. It feels like quality leather, but will not dry out or absorb any yucky stuff. I will post the source in comments.

Some people come into your life and paw prints on your heart forever and you are never ever the same. Our Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas therapy dog teams are so grateful for Mary Poole the outgoing PR/Marketing director of Baptist Hospital who is retiring this week from the hospital.

Mary's creativity and commitment to the pet therapy program has helped our teams to thrive over the years. We are grateful for the many opportunities she has given our teams to be interviewed by the press, for planning the Pink Parade that we did for several years, for making sure that patients, families, guests knew about our teams, to helping one of our teams celebrate turning 10 years old, to including us in so many different events each year. We are grateful for the posts on the hospital page, for the pictures taken and shared as well as for all that she has done to promote pet therapy.

While we have missed visiting for the past 17 months, we are looking forward to the day when we can return to the hospital to do visits. We will miss seeing Mary while we are there but are so thankful for her service to Baptist Hospital and for the love that she has shown our teams. Please help us give a high five to Mary and help us thank her for her years of service to the hospital and to our community. Happy Retirement Mary!!!

My name is: Chloe

My breed is: Mixed lab

My age is: 8 years old

My favorite human food: I don't get very much--I like doggie treats!

My biggest fear: Big Dogs

My favorite thing to do: Go on a walk with Mom and have anyone pet me!

My favorite toy: A sock or slipper or anything that belongs to Mom!

What I hate most: hmm, not sure of that--I'm really laid back.

Where do I sleep: on a long bed pillow in mom and dad's room.

Do I love car rides?: I love car rides.

Do I snore?: I don't snore but I sleep on my back with my feet in the air.

What do I do when I am not volunteering?: I play with the sweet grand-kids that come to visit mom--I let them crawl all over me, take me for a walk, feed me fake food, and run me up and down the hill. I like to be petted the best. I also like to run after squirrels with my brother Jack.
