Data from AIIMS suggests that
◼️cataracts are the cause for 62.7% of blindness cases, followed by
◼️uncorrected refractive error (19.7%),
◼️glaucoma (5.8%),
◼️posterior segment disorder (4.7%) and
◼️corneal blindness (1%).

As per the WHO’s 2010 data, India accounts for 20% of the global blindness cases.

The National Blindness survey (2015-19), in India, showed that,
◼️approximately 68 lakh people suffer from corneal blindness in at least one eye, of whom around 10 lakh are blind in both their eyes.
◼️The survey reported that corneal blindness was the leading cause of blindness among patients aged less than 50 years of age in the country, accounting for 37.5% of the cases.
