Cancer Awareness Month Part II: Breakfast Edition

Having a appetite in the morning is a marker of health!

Many health gurus like to preach about fasting until lunch for optimal digestion, but the science behind circadian rhythms, hormonal cascades, and the art of Traditional Chinese Medicine disagree.

The body is primed for digestion upon waking in that 7-9am window. By eating breakfast, it is a signal of safety and abundance to the body.

If we do not have an appetite in that critical time or are even nauseous, this is a great indicator of high stress levels.

By not eating, we are only reinforcing to the body that we are in danger and to continue to pump out cortisol.

The body will prioritize making cortisol over other hormones like estrogen, testosterone, or thyroid hormone to help the body respond to the stressful environment. This is called the fight of flight response - but most of us are chronically in that mode and can’t get out of it!

If this isn’t taken care of eventually, hormonal imbalances only get worse and the rest of the body begins to suffer from a loss of minerals due to burning them off so quickly from stress.

To bring down AM cortisol levels:
✅ Limit artificial light + screens upon waking, keep phone screen on red mode
✅ Get natural light by stepping outside or opening a window and looking out
✅ Ease yourself into the day if you can - avoid logging into social media or checking emails until after you’ve had a few moments to yourself
✅ If having coffee, have a glass of water first and something to eat
✅ Find a small meal or food item that you can nibble on to realign your body rhythms until your appetite improves
✅ Avoid 5am cardio or intense workouts. If this is your only chance to do so, make sure to eat before and avoid stimulants. Get outside ASAP afterwards

🌺 Hormonal Congestion: When the Lymphatic System Holds on to Estrogen

We often think of hormones as purely chemical messengers — but they are also energetic travelers that depend on fluid movement to stay in balance.
When lymphatic flow slows down, these hormones can become trapped in tissue, creating a hidden congestion that affects everything from mood and weight to fertility and inflammation.

Your body’s ability to detoxify estrogen — the most potent and complex female hormone — relies on more than just liver enzymes. It depends on a healthy lymphatic system to carry waste products, metabolites, and inflammatory debris safely out of your tissues.

💧 When Estrogen Doesn’t Leave the Body

Estrogen is metabolized in the liver, bound in the gut, and carried out through bile and lymph fluid.
When any part of that system slows down — due to dehydration, poor diet, tight fascia, or a sedentary lifestyle — estrogen metabolites linger.

This leads to what many call estrogen dominance, where your body may produce a normal amount of estrogen, but can’t clear it efficiently.
The result? Hormonal chaos.

💢 PMS and mood swings
💢 Tender or swollen breasts
💢 Weight gain around hips and thighs
💢 Fluid retention or bloating
💢 Headaches and fatigue
💢 Fibroids or ovarian cysts

This is not always a “hormone problem” — it’s often a drainage problem.

🩸 The Lymph–Hormone Highway

Your lymphatic system surrounds every organ — including the ovaries, uterus, thyroid, and breasts. When this fluid network becomes stagnant, hormonal waste builds up locally.

In women, the inguinal, pelvic, and axillary nodes play a vital role in clearing estrogen metabolites. Congested lymph in these areas can create:
• Breast tenderness and swelling before menstruation
• Pelvic heaviness or pain
• Water retention
• Delayed or painful periods

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and movement-based therapies help reopen these pathways, allowing hormones to circulate and clear naturally.

⚖️ The Role of the Liver and Gut

Your liver converts estrogen into water-soluble forms for elimination — but those metabolites still need to exit through bile, stool, and lymph.
If the gut microbiome is unbalanced (particularly with high β-glucuronidase activity), estrogen can be reabsorbed into circulation, creating a hormonal loop.

Supporting these organs through anti-inflammatory nutrition, hydration, and gentle detox practices ensures that estrogen is not recycled, but released.

🌿 How to Support Hormonal Flow

Here’s how to help your body move estrogen out instead of storing it:
💧 Stimulate lymphatic drainage – through MLD, dry brushing, rebounding, or deep breathing.
🥦 Support liver detox – cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, cabbage) and herbs like milk thistle and dandelion.
🦠 Balance gut flora – probiotics and fiber for healthy estrogen metabolism.
🚶‍♀️ Move daily – fascia and lymph rely on physical motion, not intensity.
🛁 Castor oil packs & heat therapy – soften fascial tension, improve circulation, and open drainage.

When the lymphatic system is open, hormones can flow. When it’s stagnant, hormones pool — leading to symptoms that mimic imbalance.

Starting a little series this month on hormonal health + actionable steps to prevent diseases such as breast cancer.

However as a researcher of light and color therapy I cannot help but point out the huge flaw in the choice of color and how exclusively it is used by people of all walks of life during this critical month.

As outlined in this video, the color pink creates a weakened system and actually messes with our hormonal system just by interacting with it!

October marks a huge time of transition as days become shorter and colder, our systems are already trying to adjust and adapt. By adding the color pink it could potentially be the tipping point for some imbalanced bodies.

What I am not doing is shaming those for wearing pink to start a conversation on hormonal and breast health. This is important stuff.

To do my part, wearing pink and changing logos is not the way. This is why I will continue to post short videos on how to actually improve your health and raise awareness on natural healing modalities.

We not only need to have the conversation, but also do the things to help our health.

Happy Fall Equinox 🍂🌾☀️

Today we welcome the first day of fall where there is a perfect balance of daylight and night before the darker months settle in. This moment reminds us each year that we require movement and rest in equal measure.

Now is the time to begin supporting your body with pungent foods like garlic, ginger, turmeric, horseradish, and sauerkraut. Including them in your broths, soups, herbal tonics, and other recipes helps to strengthen the lungs that are sensitive to colder temperatures.
