Lots of people will be planning how to be different or better versions of themselves. This isn’t a bad thing, AND there are times where trying so hard to be different or better takes us father away from being our whole selves in the world.

So in the midst of doing different and being better, may you take a moment to pause, to be, and treat yourself with a little more kindness…a little more love…and let yourself have a little more peace.

Happy New Year and hello 2023.

I’ve heard so many times that people expect to cry less often when they start therapy or doing their own inner work, but that isn’t really the point. The tears are important. They symbolize something important to us, whether it’s something we’ve lost, something we want, or someone or something has violated a boundary.

When we start to heal, we actually start to feel more. The feelings don’t go away because they can’t. They’re there for a reason. Rather, we get the tools we need to welcome them and the message they bring. Instead of getting stuck trying to push them away and make them not be there, we can let them say their piece and then be on their way.

To heal is to become open enough to flow with our internal and external experiences in ways we can manage; not to stifle them in futile attempts to “always be happy”. Happiness is a temporary feeling, not a state of being.

We can, however, bring a state of peace to every feeling we experience.

Places of fear. Places of pain. Places inside us we’d rather not exist. Things about ourselves that make us cringe and turn away.

These are most sacred spaces within us. They are the darker parts of our lives that we could not bear. And they are our vulnerable places that just wanted to be heard…to be felt…to be loved.

They are the places where we needed and could not be met…and we couldn’t truly meet our needs on our own. Maybe we weren’t old enough, mature enough, didn’t have the resources, or just weren’t ready.

But maybe now we are. Maybe now when these places of need arise, WE can meet them within ourselves. We can show them kindness. We can show them the gentleness they’ve been asking for.

And maybe these sacred dark places that have been too much to bear will start to soften and become the courage that we needed back then. The courage that we can have now.

But it is only through allowing them and trusting in ourselves that we can get there.

Take your time.
Be gentle.
Be kind.

All the parts of you deserve it.

To no fault of our own, we’re primed for living this way from a young age. We’re asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” starting at the age of 5. We’re expected to give so much thought to and have decided what our life-long goals are while we’re still getting acquainted with exploring the world and our own creativity. We’re expected to have a life-long plan at an age where we only have a fraction of the experiences that shape us into who we will be.

No wonder so many of us lose our sense of creativity as we get older. There’s been no time for it. It’s always “What’s next for you?” or “What are you currently working towards?”.

If you take a minute to think about it…like really taking this in…how exhausting is it to live life this way? How exhausting is it to live a life that tells you that if you stop…if you pause…if you rest…you’re lazy. You’re not doing enough. You’re only worth what you can produce.

So we tell ourselves that once we reach our goal…then we’ll slow down. Then, we’ll enjoy life.

I have some unfortunate news for you. When we live this way for so long, our brain gets wired this way. This means that even when we get to a point of being able to slow down, our brain won’t know how to. We’ll start to feel anxious and like there’s something we need to be doing because that’s what we’ve always done. We won’t be able to enjoy what we’ve been working so hard for.

The good news is you can start to re-wire your brain while you’re still working towards your goals. AND you CAN take care of you while working towards your goals. This isn’t a race. Even if you get some incredible recognition or praise, what will it mean if there’s nothing left of you to really appreciate it?

So take a slow breath from the belly, see if you can just start to slow your mind down, and just be here…right in this moment…and ask yourself what does your mind and body truly need right now.

Try as we may, we can’t actually make our anxiety or depression stop. We also can’t talk ourselves out of feeling them. This is because anxiety and depression are in the stuck in the parts of the nervous system that don’t have access to language. Anxiety and depression literally get stuck in the body.

When we tell people to “calm down” or to “stop being anxious/depressed”, not only is it awfully unhelpful, it creates a rupture in the relationship with our friend/partner/family member/acquaintance/coworker.

The rift forms because it exposes our inability to be present with and actually support our friend/partner/etc.. This is usually because we want to solve their struggle and we can’t, and that’s uncomfortable for us.

Instead of saying something unhelpful out of our own feeling of helplessness, we can empathize and ask how we can be truly helpful while our person is struggling.

This can make a real difference to those in our lives who are struggling and strengthen the relationship.

🍃 Control 🍃

~ A hot and difficult topic for many of us ~

~ No, it’s not just you. Our brains so badly want to be in control of our experiences and our lives. If we’re in control, we’re safe. Life is predictable. It’s comfortable.

-Except-

~ We can’t be…at least we can’t be in control of every aspect of our lives. Life just happens sometimes. Unexpected things happen. Painful things happen. And most of the time, there’s nothing we can do about it. This is hard. Really.

~ And also, what a relief. While this truth can be hard and even painful, what a relief to know that sometimes things just happen and they’re not our fault. They don’t have to mean that we didn’t try hard enough or do enough. Sometimes we just don’t have control…even a lot of times, we don’t have control.

So next time you get really worried about what’s going to happen, pause, take a breath, get curious about where your need for control is coming from…and remind yourself…you cannot be in control of what is out of your control.
