Addiction thrives in isolation, feeding on loneliness and shame. Recovery grows when we connect—with supportive friends, family, or community—because those connections anchor us, create accountability, inspire healthier habits, and strengthen self-esteem. Sobriety isn’t just a personal choice; it’s nurtured in the relationships that remind us we belong.

Reach out. Build your support. Heal together.

What does dual diagnosis mean? 🤔

A dual diagnosis means someone is living with both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. It’s also referred to as co-occurring disorders.

For some people, mental health symptoms — like depression, trauma, anxiety, or mood disorders — start first. Substances become a way to cope. For others, long-term drug or alcohol use changes brain chemistry over time, triggering mood swings, panic attacks, or emotional numbness.

In both cases, one condition often fuels the other. And unless both are treated together, the cycle usually continues.

This is why dual diagnosis treatment is so important: it gives people the chance to stabilize emotionally while also working toward lasting sobriety.

At Northpoint, we treat every client individually, crafting together a treatment plan for your needs and background, including dual-diagnosis treatment.

Recovery is not a linear process, sometimes the most important signs of progress are small, quiet shifts. So how can you tell if you’re making progress? 🤔

1️⃣ You’re Not Using, Even When Things Get Hard
You’re facing stress, frustration, or uncomfortable emotions without turning to substances or old behaviors.

2️⃣ Your Emotions Feel More Manageable
You might still have ups and downs, but you’re less reactive. You’re sitting with tough feelings instead of running from them.

3️⃣ You’re Building New Routines
Even small routines help create stability and reduce the chaos that addiction often brings.

4️⃣ Your Relationships Are Improving
You’re rebuilding trust, setting boundaries, or showing up more honestly.

5️⃣ You’re Starting to Like Who You Are
Shame and self-doubt don’t hit quite as hard. You’re noticing your values again, feeling proud of small wins, and realizing you have something to offer.

6️⃣ You’re Honest About Setbacks
Instead of hiding or denying slips, you’re owning them, talking about them, and learning from them.

7️⃣ You’re Thinking About the Future
You’re setting goals in recovery, making plans, or dreaming a little bigger.

Each day is bringing about a better version of yourself, keep moving forward! Follow us for more encouraging, educational, and relatable content.

Things to consider when choosing an outpatient program:

📈 Level of Care – outpatient programs vary in how many weekly hours of treatment they provide. Look for a program that matches the level of support and structure you need in your recovery journey, whether you’re stepping down from residential or trying to balance recovery with work and family life.

🤸 Flexibility – programs vary in which days of the week and times of the day they’re offered. Consider programs that closely align with your schedule.

🏆 Licensed Clinicians – Make sure any program you’re considering has licensed professionals. This will ensure treatment will be evidence-based and credible.

📝 Approach – Many programs will combine aspects like group and individual therapy, medication management, therapeutic activities, and random uranalysis to give you a structured and supportive environment. It’s helpful to choose a program with variety to give you a broad approach and the chance to learn what is most helpful to you.

Despite considering all these things, it still may feel uncomfortable the first few times going to treatment. But there is comfort in the uncomfortable – new environments can take time to settle in, but the challenge will bring about growth we never could have imagined.
