Heart disease is the most likely reason any of us will die. In the U.S. it is theeading cause of death in men and women.
Heart disease begins in childhood with a process called atherosclerosis, or the hardening of the arteries.
By age ten, the arteries of nearly all kids fed a Standard American Diet (SAD) will have the first signs of disease, called fatty streaks. These streaks result from an inflammatory reaction to the deposition of cholesterol in artery walls.
As age progresses, plaques start forming, getting worse with each decade, until they become deadly—manifesting as heart attacks and strokes.
If you’re older than ten, it time to eat like you give a damn. If you’re one of many American’s still eating a SAD diet, heart disease has likely already started.
The good news is that our bodies have an amazing capacity to heal and even reverse this deadly disease process.
Health starts at every age. It never too late to start working on heart healthy habits.
Here’s some tips for preventing and reversing heart disease:
❤️ Eat a heart healthy diet. There are numerous approaches, but central to them is a focus on plant-based whole foods—legumes, greens, whole grains, nuts, seeds.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️ Physical exercise daily. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 mins of moderate intensity aerobic activity weekly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️ Prioritize sleep. Sleep is an often overlooked factor in chronic disease and heart heath. Aim for 8 hours of sleep nightly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️ Stress management. Stress increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️ Quit smoking. Even one cigarette daily increases your cardiovascular risk.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The overwhelming majority of heart disease is due to modifiable risk factors - meaning that YOU have the ability to change things!
February is American Heart Month, and over the next month my goal is to educate, and bring awareness to this largely preventable disease.
Here’s some thoughts on promoting healthier hearts:
✅ Exercise daily. Get outside and move at least 30 minutes daily.
✅ Eat an anti-inflammatory whole foods diet. Focus on getting 5 servings of veggies daily into your diet (serving is ~1 cup).
✅ Heart disease is a process that can start decades before symptoms. Prioritize health at every age.
✅ Reduce your stress levels. Consider incorporating meditation into your daily routine (a great place to start is the Waking Up app).
✅ An Aspirin a day will not prevent heart disease.
✅ Get regular blood work. LDL and HDL levels are NOT sufficient. There are much better labs for predicting risk, including Lp(a)-P, and LDL-P.
🌊 You’ve likely heard a lot of environmental reasons for eliminating plastic waste, but you may not have heard the health benefit.
🥗The simple act of paying for groceries with cash versus a credit or debit card may actually impact your food choices.
💵 A study in the Journal of Consumer Research, found that paying with cash leads to more careful spending and healthier choices.
💳 Considering that more than 1/3 of all U.S. grocery purchases are with a credit or debit card, paying with cash is an interesting strategy for promoting healthier eating.
💧Have you had a glass of water today?
If not, stop what you're doing and grab a glass.
💧I'll be honest, when I'm busy drinking water can go by the wayside. Yet, drinking water is one of the easiest things we can do daily for health promotion and productivity.
💧Proper hydration is essential for numerous bodily functions. It helps with digestion, keeps joints lubricated, regulates temperature, eliminates toxins, aids circulation, and boosts cognitive and physical performance to name a few.
💧Hydration is variable from person to person and depends on many factors including diet, and exercise. Generally, a sedentary adult needs an average of between 1.5-3 liters of total water daily (food, water, and other beverages included).
💧In my practice to simplify, I often tell people a general rule of thumb is 1/3 - 1/2 their body weight in ounces daily.
💧If you’re struggling with water intake:
- Carrying a water bottle with you.
- Set reminders on your phone or use an app (Plant Nanny is one of my favorites)
- Drink a cup of water after every bathroom visit.
- Flavor your water. Some of my favorites ways to add flavor are: cucumber slices, lemons wedges, mint leaves, and watermelon cubes.
- Set challenges with family and friends to help keep you accountable.

🔬Functional lab testing is one of many tools I use with patients to better understand what is going on in the body. They allow us to dig deeper, and look for underlying imbalances not picked up by conventional lab testing. Functional testing can be a game changer for patients, and lead to earlier intervention for disease processes and better outcomes.
🔬That said, there’s a caveat. Sometimes too much testing can actually cause harm, as it introduces more variables into an often already complex health picture.
My approach with patients is to focus on #foundationsofhealth to correct symptoms first, then consider testing options later if needed. 😴🥗🏃♀️
👨⚕️👩⚕️If your medical practitioner is advising lots of testing, give them the benefit of doubt and ask their clinical reasoning. If you're still feeling overburdened consider prioritizing tests that are the most likely to yield insights.
