On this day in Washington (August 15, 1870), Seattle’s first public schoolhouse opened. Previously, students attended private schools. Sorely needed, the two-story, two-room building on Third Avenue downtown welcomed 50 students on day one and 100 within a week. To relieve overcrowding, a second school opened downtown in 1875.

The first teacher, Lizzy Ordway, a former Mercer Girl, likely ran the school in line with the common practices of 19th-century education. Adherence to discipline and moral development were highly valued. Rules of conduct would challenge the most devoted students today. They demonstrated knowledge through recitation, writing, and memorization. Respecting teachers and good manners meant everything. Students frequently brought the teacher an apple or flowers.

Monthly meetings are held the 2nd Monday of the month, with breaks for summer (July, August) and January.

Meetings are held at 2pm in the lower level of the Bellingham Elks Lodge, 710 Samish Way, Bellingham, Washington.

Visitors are always welcome, but we encourage folks to join our society -- it’s only $15/yr for 9+ hours of genealogy education and fun! And you don’t need to have family history in Whatcom County -- most of our members have research interests all over the United States and beyond.
