A professionally sound educational experience is used to give each child an opportunity to learn through participation, demonstration, and practice. Children learn from professional licensed teachers and well-trained instructors. The Belpre Safetytown program is two-fold. First, in a classroom setting, different safety rules are introduced daily along with guest speakers who help explain and enfor
ce the daily safety rules. Field trips to local safety partners are also utilized to give every student a real-life experience. Safety around the home is most important so children are taught to identify and avoid dangerous objects such as electrical appliances and chemicals with special emphasis on the dangers in and out of the medicine cabinet. Safety around pets and other animals will be covered. Each child will learn that he/she has many safety friends. Police officers, firefighters, bus drivers, doctors, Coast Guard officials, and representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will interact with the children on a one to one basis. The children will learn why some of these people wear uniforms and about the equipment, they use to help keep us safe. Next, a miniature town complete with streets, sidewalks, buildings, and traffic devices make for a life-like area where the children can practice what they are taught each day. Each child will learn to identify and obey traffic safety devices. Safe automobile and passenger behavior will be demonstrated and practiced by each child. Through craft sessions, classroom work, role-play, and field trips, Belpre Safetytown students are much better prepared to meet and deal with the safety decisions they will confront on a daily basis.
