Thank you to the Belvidere High School Leo Club members for lending a helping hand and spreading holiday cheer throughout our community.

Their enthusiasm and teamwork made decorating our building for the season even more special. The festive touches they added truly brightened our space and brought smiles to our residents and staff alike.

The holidays are full of excitement — music, decorations, family gatherings — but for someone with dementia, all that activity can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Bright lights, loud noises, and crowded rooms may cause confusion, anxiety, or fatigue. It’s important to notice the signs of overstimulation, and help your loved one stay calm.

If you notice restlessness, irritability, or a sudden desire to leave the room, help your loved one feel comfortable by providing quiet spaces, or building quiet breaks into the day!

It can also help to keep gatherings small, and surroundings familiar. Avoid overstimulation by focusing on peaceful, one-on-one moments. ✨

The holidays are meant for connection but for someone with dementia, large gatherings and fast-paced conversations can sometimes feel overwhelming.

When you sit down together this season, focus on comfort over correction. Instead of asking, “Do you remember…?”, try saying, “It’s so nice to spend time with you.”

A few gentle conversation tips:
💬 Speak slowly and with warmth
💬 Use names and familiar cues
💬 Reminisce about positive feelings rather than specific dates
💬 Give them time to respond — silence can be soothing, too.

Meaningful moments come from shared emotion and presence.
