If you're on a natural wellness journey, this reminder is for you!

It's easy to become frustrated with your body when you struggle with one, or even multiple symptoms - acne, allergies, gut issues, period problems, fatigue, etc.

No doubt about it, these are annoying.

But!

What if you reframed this as your body doing everything it can to send out a message so that you tune it - like a car's check engine light!

When feeling all the feels about your health struggles, remind yourself - my body is FOR me, not AGAINST me.

Then, listen in!

It may need something as simple as - extra rest, more self care, better work-life boundaries, more fruits & veggies, less alcohol.

I believe we should somewhat normalize pre-period bloat. While it can be a symptom of imbalanced hormones, there’s some aspect of it where the saying ‘it is what it is’ applies.

I remember seeing a video here on IG where a woman documents her belly each of the 4 weeks of her cycle. She becomes more visibly bloated with each week leading up to her period. Watching it I remember feeling amazement and gratitude for the body remembering all it goes through month after month. So many fluctuations, and meanwhile the body is hangin on and ridin those waves 🌊

Shifting my mindset has by far the most helpful way that I’ve let bloating rule less of my life. Sharing a few other tips & tricks that also help ease the pesky symptom.

My challenge to you - the next time you’re feeling bloated and frustrated that your pants feel extra snug, take a moment to pause & show yourself some love 🤍

If I had a quarter for every time a woman claimed irregular bleeding, heavy/painful periods, mood swings, breast tenderness, low energy, sleep issues, and/or acne as her norm…well you know the rest.

Here to tell you that you no longer have to accept this, and certainly don’t have to go on suffering during that time of month. Go ahead and let out that sigh of relief!

The symptoms above are a sign that your hormones are a little (or a lot) out of balance. This could be due to a medical condition such as polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, thyroid disorder, or simply due to general hormone balance.

Hormones are especially sensitive to lifestyle and can easily be thrown off by stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, acute illness, environmental toxin exposure, and hormonal birth control.

I work with women of all ages, and at all stages (puberty, reproductive age, peri/menopause) to optimize hormone balance. This often looks like -

- Menstrual cycle education
- Diet & lifestyle counseling
- Prescription of natural therapies - herbs, supplements, homeopathy
- Use of conventional medicine when necessary (i.e. thyroid replacement)
- Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for peri/menopause

Hormones impact how you look, feel, & interact with the world, so let’s get to work!

Want to up your body’s natural ability to heal itself?

Add in several of these to your daily/weekly routine, to up your vitality -

Alternating Showers - at the end of each shower, switch back and forth between hot & cold several times. Keep hot exposure longer than cold, but always end with a cold rinse.

Castor Oil Packs - applying castor oil to the abdomen can help with overall detox, GI issues (bloating, constipation, pain) + hormone issues (cysts, menstrual cramps). I recommend 2-3 times weekly + as needed for symptom relief.

Dry Skin Brushing - this helps stimulate lymph flow, improve circulation, exfoliate skin, & reduce cellulitis. Spend a few minutes before each shower doing this. As you move along the body, always brush towards the heart. For those visual learners, check out YouTube for a video demonstration.

Breathwork + Meditation - regular practice helps to shift the nervous system from a flight or flight state to a rest & digest state, which is necessary for immune, GI, & hormonal health…just to name a few! This can be as simple as 1 minute daily to start.

Forest Bathing - I call time spent in Nature Vitamin N for a reason! It’s one of the best therapies for pretty much any ailment - mental/emotional/physical. As regularly as you can, take in that fresh air & let your feet spend some time connecting with the ground.

Yoga/Tai Chi/Qigong - these are often referred to as moving forms of meditation. Gentle movements and stretches help to restore/maintain overall balance by reseting the nervous system, increasing circulation, + reconnecting the mind + body.

Which do you already practice? Which are on your list to try?

Happy Summer Solstice! 🔆

Passing along a few basic for optimal summer health -

💦 Keep well hydrated, aiming for at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces daily. If you're out in the sun sweating and/or vigorously exercising, add in some electrolytes. Look for powders that are low in sugar and additives.

🍉 Focus on cooling foods, i.e. watermelon, cucumber, + mint. For the perfect summer salad combining these - https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/minty-watermelon-cucumber-salad/

🧴To limit chemical exposure, opt for natural sunscreen - https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/

Whether the goal is to re-establish, maintain, or optimize your health, tending to the foundations is a non-negotiable part of the treatment process ✅

Making changes + staying on track when life gets crazy isn't easy. I 100% feel you 😅

I encourage my patients (and remind myself) to set small, attainable goals. Even something as seemingly small as adding 1 extra serving of veggies per day sets you in the right direction 🥦

I say, celebrate the small milestones, and use the excitement to keep you moving towards your larger goals 🥳

Oh and friendly reminder to let go of the expectation of perfection. It's a process, with ebbs & flows being inevitable 🌊
