The yoga of parenthood is something I am passionate about facilitating, holding space for, and being in my own personal practice with. These early parenthood days are challenging. I’ve been in conversations with other parents lately about the challenges of my current stage and it helps so much to hear their challenges, struggles and triumphs and to share my own. Let’s take this journey together. We need each other.

If you are interested in supporting the postpartum population with yoga, join me live online Feb 16-18 for 20 hours of continuing education.

Ever feel inadequate raising your kids, like you can’t quite get it right? Ever feel like you are out of balance and you aren’t sure how to tip the scales to find those elusive moments of equanimity?

Maybe it’s just me - but I don’t think I’m alone. The exhaustion and confusion of being a parent in the early years (Or maybe forever? I don’t know… I’m still in the early years.) can be overwhelming. I often find myself not meeting my own expectations and left feeling deficient.

I often find myself lacking warmth, humor, and kindness as I fumble through learning how to parent these amazing and challenging little humans who call me “Mom.” I often judge myself against a pre-parenthood version of me when my well runs dry. The days can feel long without self-compassion.

Self-compassion helps me be kinder to myself as I navigate the challenges of raising children. And this is good for me and good for my children. When I’m self-compassionate, I’m a good role model for my kids. By role modeling kindness to myself, I’m helping my kids learn that it’s okay to make mistakes, forgive myself and try to do better next time.

It’s a work in progress. I’m a work in progress.

May we all give ourselves the compassion we need as we try to care for our children.

If you are interested in exploring some self-compassion practices, check out Prenatal + Postpartum Yoga Wind Down on Thursday evenings with me (Alexa ) and Daniele

Pregnancy, Birth, Yoga, the Nervous System!…and Life!!

The connection between our nervous system and labor initiates a shift in hormones in the body to increase cortisol, oxytocin and what’s known as a “cocktail of hormones”.  Being in a healthy relationship with your NS during this transformational time in life impacts our experience.  The makeup of our NS imprints our unborn babies, our relationship with ourself and others and impacts our birth and postpartum time.

Years ago I was in deep grief, not getting enough sleep, living with emotional and work stress which all led to an overwhelmed nervous system.  It started with my breath.  I could not take a deep breath and felt at times I would just stop breathing.  It was scary.  Since then I have learned so much about grief, stress, my nervous system, ways to support myself and creating healthy boundaries (still working on that one:)

And so it was yoga that I took my first steps on my path to healing.  From immersions and yoga teacher trainings; restorative yoga, trauma informed and pelvic floor yoga, prenatal yoga and meditation.  These paths brought me back to myself and my breath which is where it all starts.  Like the first breath a newborn takes at birth, but it actually starts before that. Development of the autonomic ns and vagus nerve begins with our own mothers and their nervous system, environment and social network and our own birth. What is amazing though is we can repair and rewire our brain and NS, but it takes time.

How might my births and postpartum been different if I had known then what I know now.  And yet it was all a part of my personal healing that led me to where I am now.

Tips for self regulating in pregnancy and life:
•Feel your feet ( grounding )
•Breath ( pranayama )
•Movement (asana )
•Walk in nature ( connect to the elements )

More to come…

"The New York Post reported on a study of pregnant people in 2019.

Researchers studying the limits of human endurance have determined that the physical intensity of pregnancy is basically like running a 40-week marathon.

“Pregnancy is the most energetically expensive activity the human body can maintain for nine months,” Duke University evolutionary anthropology professor Herman Pontzer, who co-authored the study, tells The Post.

This study reports to us that pregnant people reach the limit of human endurance. So, go on with your badass, pregnant self! I like to tell my pregnant clients and students that they are multitasking ALL THE TIME. No matter what you are doing to live your life, you are also growing a human!

An important part of this report is that it proves just how taxing pregnancy can be on the body. No one has to tell endurance athletes that they need recovery after an ultra-marathon. What an achievement! We celebrate them and recognize their need for recovery and rest. How much more should we celebrate what it takes to carry and birth a baby and affirm the need for recovery?!? Instead, all the attention is shifted to new baby and postpartum people get one check up 6-8 weeks after giving birth. Our culture puts pressure on postpartum people to “get their pre-pregnancy body back” and “lose the baby weight” and “get back into shape.” If you take anything away from this post, I hope it is this:

You are not out of shape. You are in recovery!"
