Meet the Herd Part 2!

Meet Sky, a 21 year old Thoroughbred. Before we met, Sky was a racehorse. Due to circumstances outside of his control, he ended up at a rescue needing rehabilitation. I adopted Sky in 2013 in San Diego, CA. Sky is a special boy with a unique personality, but I don't want to give it all away!

What do you think interacting with Sky in an equine-assisted therapy session would be like?

Why Lupine Meadows?🪻

I chose this name for a few reasons. Lupine has always been one of my favorite flowers. It stands out against the landscape, growing tall, vibrant flowers in harsh, rugged climates. Due to their deep root systems, lupine are some of the first flowers to bloom after a disturbance, such as a wildfire.

The name lupine comes from lupus, Latin for "wolf". The plant was given this name because it was once thought to drain, or "wolf", nutrients from the soil. This misconception has been proven false. In fact, lupine are nitrogen-fixing plants, meaning they actually improve the fertility of the soil by converting nitrogen from the air into a usable food source for other plants.

Lupine grows abundantly around the ranch and on the trails beyond it. Everytime I see it, I am reminded of my connection to nature and its beauty. To me, lupine represents resilience, growth, and connection.

What does your favorite flower represent to you? 🌼

Meet the Herd! This is Geronimo, aka "Gerry". He's my first horse and the inspiration for me pursuing equine-assisted therapy. Geronimo is a 23 year old, grey quarter horse. He's been there and done it all with me over the last 15 years. He taught me how to be around horses and how healing they can be. Gerry sparked my passion for these incredible animals and I am forever grateful for the lessons he has taught me. I am excited to get to share this special horse with you all! (photo credit: , )

Why use horses in therapy? There are so many reasons!

One reason:
As prey animals that live in herds, horses are incredibly sensitive and perceptive. They can reflect our emotional state and respond to changes in our emotions, providing real-time feedback on how we are feeling and how others may be perceiving us. As a result, engaging with horses can increase our awareness of our feelings, our body language, and how our actions impact others.

Hi! My name is Steph Halper and I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist practicing in Oregon. I'm excited to offer equine-assisted therapy and nature based therapy in Bend, as well as traditional in-person and virtual therapy. If you find yourself drawn to connecting with the natural world, or want to try therapy in a different setting, equine-assisted therapy or nature based therapy could be right for you! In equine-assisted therapy, horses are incorporated into the therapeutic experience in a variety of ways. For example, horses can be used as a metaphor for other experiences or relationships in your life. Also, horses can provide us with a hands-on experience that we can learn from and apply to different areas of our lives. The equine-assisted therapy that I offer does not include riding, but rather it focuses on connection and communication on the ground, with opportunities for consent from both the client and the horse. If you are interested in working with me and my herd, please feel free to reach out at lupinemeadowstherapy@gmail.com. (Thank you and for the beautiful photos, more to come!)
