This whole practice was done with eyes closed.
From time to time I really like to take a different approach to the routine. Closing the eyes is an easy way to do this. It confronts me with my fears:
The obvious one - loosing balance but also of the more layered ones - imperfection, being alone with myself, the dark, feeling vulnerable.

Sometimes I dare to do just a pose or two, a balance one if I am ok to accept defeat. Sometimes I dare to do the whole practice and see where it takes me.

It is scary and frustrating but it is deep and can even be fun (if you allow curiosity to take the driver’s seat).

Gravity is a real thing. How we hold our bodies in relationship to gravity is also a real thing.

Gravity is a real thing. How we hold our bodies in relationship to gravity is also a real thing.

A few simple and less simple restorative yoga setups.
Obviously, one can do these alone but there is something to be said about having a person to wrap you up in goodness and guide you through some breathing/visualization or relaxation.

Restorative yoga is really for every body! No yoga experience is needed, just an openness and willingness to just BE.

If every day one could remember to do just a few minutes of cat/cow flow…
How wonderful this movement is for the spine!
•You can do it sitting on a block/pillow/bolster/chair
•You can do it on all fours on the floor or in bed, right after waking up
•You can even do it standing

No matter the variation, if one could only remember to devote a few minutes a day to taking care of the spine. Aaaaahhhhh….

Why yoga?
Because there are moments where you think you can fly.
Those little moments of discovery, realization… transformation…
Little moments of true joy. One smile that you know is not fake.
Those moments are as fleeting as balancing on a ball (except if you work in a circus- they are longer then :)
This is why I come back to the mat (as well as when I am in pain).
Moments of ease for the mind and of joy for the body. Or is it the other way around ? 😊

Finishing the second trimester of Yoga anatomy Principles with .kaminoff
The cherry on the cake is this lecture on the nervous system 🍒
No matter how much we know, we still don’t know, nor can control all of our nervous system and how it works. Personally, I love understanding the basics and I leave the mystery to work it’s way as well. I don’t have to know it all to be able to feel things, be amazed by my own experiences and admire the mystery.

But, in regards to the restorative yoga practice - here are some realizations that are arising:
•it’s not like we are going to assume a RY pose and all of a sudden jump into the parasympathetic response pool and just float.
•it’s more like - being in the state of mindfulness will create opportunities to become aware of the fine dance between the parasympathetic and the sympathetic responses that is constantly happening in ourselves.
•the more awareness we have, the more subtle shifts we can consciously make to allow the parasympathetic dance partner to lead.
•the more we allow that side of our NS to lead, the more stable, responsive, soft , measured our response to the outside world can be.

Also, stress is not BAD. Stress is a necessary component of our everyday life. That is the other dancer in the dance of life. The problem is if it takes over the whole act (or most of it).

Allowing ourselves the time to tune into ourselves is the key. Restorative yoga setups provide a sense of security and stillness for the physical outer body so that our emotional and inside body can speak up and be heard.
RY is not always the answer but it can be the place for good questions to arise.

Curious about what your body has to say?
Come try a session in my sweet, little yoga room here in Benicia. 💕
You can always DM me with any questions :)
