Congratulations to Katelyn, a registered nurse in the emergency department, on winning the Trauma Trivia Challenge for August! The Trauma Trivia Challenge is an education tool that Ashleigh, our trauma program manager, instituted to help our trauma team keep their skills and knowledge current.

Saline Memorial Hospital is a Level III Designated Trauma Center and is the only designated trauma center in Saline County.

Outwardly, even to his family, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Jorge Gomez seemed to have it all. Emily Gomez, his sister, described him as funny, kind, successful and driven. She never knew he was struggling with mental health concerns at all until he committed su***de in September 2022.

“It was the biggest shock of our lives,” she said. “He was so happy and joyful and one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet. He just played it off so well; he seemed so put together.”

In recognition of Su***de Prevention Month, the hospital is hosting a lighting ceremony on the Saline Memorial Hospital page at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29. Community members can submit the names of loved ones who have been lost due to su***de at SalineMemorial.org/Luminary by Monday, Sept. 22, for inclusion in the ceremony.

Last week, our employee engagement committee organized a uniform sale here at the hospital for the team to be able to get scrubs, shoes and accessories. Saline Health System staff were able to use payroll deductions to spread out the payments over up to four pay periods, and everyone got a 20% discount.

Our surgical team recently received very high praise from one of our patients, and we wanted to take a moment to recognize them for providing such stellar care! Here is what the patient had to say:

"I’m actually super super happy with my care today. I have been to hospitals where doctors and nurses are dismissive and don’t listen to the patient. This isn’t that atmosphere. I truly wouldn’t want to have surgery anywhere else. I have had surgeries where the doctor or nurse stuck me 16 times trying to find a vein. I was amazed when the nurse found my vein first time. I have had people dig in my arm and dig in my arm. The quality of care that I received was above and beyond. It’s horrific to see such horrible reviews when I have had bad healthcare all over the United States and was simply amazed today. Very [grateful] for my experience and will definitely make this the hospital of choice."

When someone is experiencing a stroke, every minute matters! That's why we are so proud to honor JP, a registered nurse in the emergency department, for receiving the Stroke Champion Silver Club award from the UAMS IDHI Stroke Program for ensuring a patient received timely treatment when experiencing a stroke.

We partner with the Stroke Program so that patients experiencing a stroke can get the specialized care they need, right here at Saline Memorial Hospital. When someone suffers from a stroke, time is very valuable. Team members from Saline Orthopedics & Sports Medicine joined us to talk about delivering top-notch orthopedic care.

Earlier this year, we announced that Jayme Workman, director of the emergency department, won the 2025 Mercy Award for Saline Memorial Hospital. Last week, Jayme joined Mercy Award recipients from across the country at the annual Mercy Award celebration in Nashville, where Lifepoint named the companywide winner, Jackie Mcelyea from Frye Regional Medical Center. Congratulations to Jayme, Jackie and all the Mercy Award recipients! Thank you for modeling compassion, kindness and a selfless spirit for all of us!

We enjoyed getting to spend time with the nursing students at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Aug. 20. We even ran into one of our team members, Jared, who works in patient care support while he is attending nursing school.
