Berkeley High rising senior Machai Humphries profiled for his work with The Hidden Genius Project! Go Machai!

from Instagram's ✨ | When (Machai Humphries) was accepted into The Hidden Genius Project program, he went in without knowing what to expect. Looking back as an alumnus, Machai said he’s gained brothers, connections and opportunities. "The Hidden Genius Project changed how I think of things — how I go into things and learn," he said. "It changed my perspective of the world."

For the Berkeley High School student, a rising senior who turns 17 this summer, design has “so many layers and subjects.” Looking ahead to college, Machai hopes to continue expressing himself through art, and further develop his interest in drawing, as well as character and logo design. His aunt has been helping him build a collection of his best work, which includes the logos and merch he’s been designing for his school and The Hidden Genius Project]. His dream school: UCLA, where he hopes to major in art and animation.

| The Hidden Genius Project is among 3 Black-led organizations we worked with to develop a grant program, in partnership with Brooklyn Museum, focused on uplifting emerging and aspiring Black designers. Apply for a grant at the link in our bio. We’ll tell the stories of our other collaborators — Inneract Project and Chicago Mobile Makers — in the weeks to come.
