Polyphagia is one of the 3 P's of Diabetes - the three cardinal symptoms that often occur together. These 3P’s are polydipsia or increased thirst, polyuria or frequent urination, and polyphagia or excessive hunger.

The medical term for polyphagia is excessive or extreme hunger. It’s different from having an increased appetite after exercise or other physical activity. While your hunger level will return to normal after eating, in those with uncontrolled diabetes, polyphagia won’t go away if you eat more food.

In a country like Nigeria where more than 50% of people with diabetes are unaware of their status, it is worthwhile to screen all adults to rule out diabetes.
