Maryland Orthopedic Specialists

Maryland Orthopedic Specialists Our mission is to provide the highest quality orthopedic & sports medicine-focused care possible to athletes and individuals of all ages and levels.

Our practice is composed of three board certified orthopedic surgeons who are all fellowship trained in either sports medicine or hand surgery. We bring the highest level of patient-centered care available. We are partnered with a dedicated team of rehab specialists (physical therapists and athletic trainers), all of whom share a common goal, to return you to your peak form. Our physicians and therapists work in a team fashion, employing the most modern therapeutic techniques, and have literally helped thousands of patients each year recover from a wide variety of injuries. When surgical intervention is required, we utilize the most minimally invasive, joint preserving techniques available. With our advanced pain management protocol, patients are returning to work and sports in record time and with minimal discomfort. Our practice is sports medicine focused. For our younger athletes, we specialize in the prevention and treatment of both minor and major sports injuries. We are currently partnered with several area high schools, providing athletic trainers to the schools for true prevention and treatment of minor injuries, and to assess for more serious injuries. We host injury prevention clinics. We pretest all the athletes with an advanced neurocognitive software program, to aid in the management of concussion (click on Our Practice : ImPACT for details). We are acutely sensitive to the needs of our younger patients and will return the athlete to play as quickly as is safely possible. Our adult athletic patients range from current and former professional athletes to recreational and occasional athletes of all ages. While our goals may differ depending on your needs, we will always strive to keep you working hard and playing hard, for as long as you want. For the more worn out athletes, we are focused on joint preservation techniques. When those fail or are inappropriate, our adult reconstructive specialist will help you join the millions of patients with artificial joints, many of whom are still athletes. If you have a work related orthopedic injury, we will partner with your place of employment to return you to work quickly and safely. With our electronic health record, you can pre-enter your medical history and important visit history. You can make and change appointments, contact the office staff, request medication refills, and visit our patient education library. In the office, we can fill our most common prescriptions for you on-site, preventing a visit to the pharmacy and usually at the identical cost. We have digital radiology and a vast array of orthopedic braces. All of our services are designed to make your visit as cost and time efficient as possible. We will be constantly working to improve your experience.

Knee pain after a fall or awkward twist? Understanding exactly which ligament is affected is crucial for your recovery plan. 🦵

The ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) are the central stabilizers of your knee, but they sustain injuries in very different ways.

ACL Tears
• How it happens: Usually occurs during non-contact sports involving sudden stops, pivoting, or changing direction.
• The Symptoms: Often accompanied by a loud "pop," immediate swelling, and a distinct feeling that the knee is unstable or "giving way."
• Treatment: For active individuals and athletes, surgical reconstruction is often necessary to restore full stability and function.

PCL Tears
• How it happens: Typically results from a direct blow to the front of a bent knee, such as falling hard on the knee or striking a dashboard in a car accident.
• The Symptoms: Pain often centers behind the knee with stiffness and swelling. Unlike an ACL tear, the instability may feel more subtle.
• Treatment: Interestingly, many PCL injuries can heal effectively with dedicated physical therapy and bracing, though severe cases may still require surgical intervention.

If your knee doesn't feel right, don't push through the pain. Schedule an evaluation with our knee specialists. 🩺

The 2026 Winter Olympics have reignited one of the biggest debates in sports medicine: Can an elite athlete ski at 80+ mph on a torn ACL with just a brace?

The short answer? Maybe in the short term. But the science tells a different story about what happens next.

Without reconstruction, the knee faces micro-instability with every pivot. Over time, that means meniscus damage, cartilage breakdown, and a fast track to osteoarthritis. The research is clear — bracing may get you back faster, but ACL reconstruction protects the joint for the long haul.

You don't have to be an Olympic skier to deserve that same level of care. At Maryland Orthopedic Specialists, our fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeons use the same evidence-based protocols being discussed at Milano-Cortina 2026.

Whether it's a weekend warrior ACL tear or a competitive athlete's career-defining injury — your comeback deserves world-class expertise.

That nagging shoulder pain during your serve, your swim stroke, or even reaching for something on a high shelf? It might be more than just soreness.

A labral tear is one of the most common — and most overlooked — shoulder injuries in active adults. The labrum is a ring of cartilage that keeps your shoulder joint stable. When it tears, you might notice deep aching, clicking, weakness overhead, or a feeling that your shoulder could "give out."

The good news? You don't have to live with it. Whether your path forward is physical therapy and PRP injections or a minimally invasive arthroscopic repair, our fellowship-trained sports medicine team creates a personalized plan to get you back to what you love.

Three Montgomery County locations. Same-day acute injury appointments available.

Is your shoulder pain limiting your range of motion? You might be dealing with frozen shoulder. ❄️ To help you understand this condition, we've answered some of the most frequently asked questions we receive at our clinic.

Q: What exactly is frozen shoulder?
A: This condition occurs when the connective tissue enclosing the shoulder joint (the shoulder capsule) becomes thickened and tight. This stiffness restricts movement, making even simple tasks like reaching for a shelf or fastening a seatbelt difficult and painful.

Q: What are the main symptoms?
A: The condition typically develops in three stages:
• Freezing: Any movement of your shoulder causes pain, and your range of motion starts to become limited.
• Frozen: Pain may begin to diminish during this stage, but your shoulder becomes stiffer, and using it becomes more difficult.
• Thawing: The range of motion in your shoulder begins to improve.

Q: How do you treat it?
A: Treatment focuses on controlling pain and restoring as much range of motion as possible. Our approach often includes physical therapy to stretch the shoulder capsule, anti-inflammatory medications, and sometimes corticosteroid injections. In severe cases that don't respond to conservative care, we may discuss advanced surgical options to release the tightness.

If you are experiencing stiffness that won't go away, don't wait for it to "thaw" on its own. Early intervention can significantly speed up recovery. Contact our office to schedule a consultation. 🩺
