Maryland Orthopedic Specialists

Maryland Orthopedic Specialists Our practice is composed of three board certified orthopedic surgeons who are all fellowship trained in either sports medicine or hand surgery.

Maryland’s premier orthopedic and sports medicine practice, known throughout the community as the experts you can trust to deliver the absolute best level of personalized care. We bring the highest level of patient-centered care available. We are partnered with a dedicated team of rehab specialists (physical therapists and athletic trainers), all of whom share a common goal, to return you to your

peak form. Our physicians and therapists work in a team fashion, employing the most modern therapeutic techniques, and have literally helped thousands of patients each year recover from a wide variety of injuries. When surgical intervention is required, we utilize the most minimally invasive, joint preserving techniques available. With our advanced pain management protocol, patients are returning to work and sports in record time and with minimal discomfort. Our practice is sports medicine focused. For our younger athletes, we specialize in the prevention and treatment of both minor and major sports injuries. We are currently partnered with several area high schools, providing athletic trainers to the schools for true prevention and treatment of minor injuries, and to assess for more serious injuries. We host injury prevention clinics. We pretest all the athletes with an advanced neurocognitive software program, to aid in the management of concussion (click on Our Practice : ImPACT for details). We are acutely sensitive to the needs of our younger patients and will return the athlete to play as quickly as is safely possible. Our adult athletic patients range from current and former professional athletes to recreational and occasional athletes of all ages. While our goals may differ depending on your needs, we will always strive to keep you working hard and playing hard, for as long as you want. For the more worn out athletes, we are focused on joint preservation techniques. When those fail or are inappropriate, our adult reconstructive specialist will help you join the millions of patients with artificial joints, many of whom are still athletes. If you have a work related orthopedic injury, we will partner with your place of employment to return you to work quickly and safely. With our electronic health record, you can pre-enter your medical history and important visit history. You can make and change appointments, contact the office staff, request medication refills, and visit our patient education library. In the office, we can fill our most common prescriptions for you on-site, preventing a visit to the pharmacy and usually at the identical cost. We have digital radiology and a vast array of orthopedic braces. All of our services are designed to make your visit as cost and time efficient as possible. We will be constantly working to improve your experience.

Shoulder pain at night. Weakness reaching overhead. Difficulty lifting your arm away from your body.💪

These are the hallmark signs of a rotator cuff tear — and they affect more than 20% of adults over 40. By age 60, that number exceeds 50%.

✨The good news✨: surgery is not always the answer. A structured physical therapy program resolves symptoms in 50-80% of partial tear cases. When conservative care is not enough, today’s options range from minimally invasive biologic treatments like PRP, to the REGENETEN collagen scaffold for partial tears, to arthroscopic repair for full-thickness tears — with 80-90% of patients reporting excellent outcomes.

⏰The key is not waiting. Early evaluation protects your tendon, your cartilage, and your ability to return to the activities you love.🏌️‍♂️⛹️‍♂️⛷️🏓🎾

You rolled your ankle months ago. The swelling went down, but something still does not feel right. Can anyone relate? 🙋

If your ankle keeps giving way, aches after a long day, or feels wobbly during a run, you may be dealing with chronic ankle instability. Up to 40% of people who suffer a first-time lateral ankle sprain go on to develop this condition, and it DOES NOT resolve on its own.

The good news is most cases improve without surgery. A structured rehabilitation program targeting balance, proprioception, and peroneal strength is the foundation of care. When conservative treatment is not enough, the modified Brostrom procedure has a long track record of restoring stability.

Do not let a nagging ankle become a long-term problem. Untreated instability can lead to cartilage damage and early arthritis. Call us at 301-515-0900 or visit us online to schedule a consultation, and read our full article on chronic ankle instability to learn more.

Working from a desk? 💻 Binge-watching your favorite show? How you sit matters more than you think! Poor posture can lead to back pain, neck strain, and headaches. 🖥️😣

Improve your sitting alignment and protect your spine with these simple tips:👇
•🦶 Feet on the floor: Keep both feet flat on the ground. Your knees should be at or slightly below the level of your hips.
•🪑 Sit back: Your back should be against the chair with a small curve in your lower back. Use a lumbar pillow for extra support if needed.
•💪 Shoulders relaxed: Keep your shoulders back and down, away from your ears. Avoid slouching forward.
•👀 Screen at eye level: Position your monitor or screen directly in front of you at eye level to prevent neck strain.

Small changes can make a big difference in how you feel! 🌟 If you're struggling with pain from sitting, we can help. Call Maryland Orthopedic Specialists at (301) 515-0900 to learn more! 📞

Time for a little myth-busting on back pain! 💥 Let's separate fact from fiction.

❌ Myth: The best way to fix back pain is with prolonged bed rest.

✅ Fact: While a short period of rest (1-2 days) might be helpful for severe pain, studies show that staying active is far more beneficial for most back pain. Gentle movement, like walking and stretching, helps maintain muscle strength, improves blood flow, and can speed up your recovery. Too much bed rest can actually make your muscles weaker and prolong the pain.

Don't let back pain keep you down. Our specialists can create a personalized treatment plan to get you moving again. Call Maryland Orthopedic Specialists at (301) 515-0900 to schedule your appointment or request an appointment online.

The weather is getting warmer, and the garden is calling! ☀️ Before you grab your gloves and trowel, let's talk about protecting your back. Improper posture during yard work is a common cause of aches and pains.

Keep your body happy while your garden flourishes with these tips:
•Bend at the knees: When lifting soil bags or pots, always bend your knees and hips, not your waist. Keep your back straight and lift with your legs.
•Kneel, don't bend: Use a gardening pad or kneeler to get closer to the ground. This prevents you from rounding your lower back while planting or weeding.
•Switch it up: Avoid staying in one position for too long. Change tasks every 20-30 minutes to give different muscle groups a rest.
•Keep it close: Hold tools, plants, and other materials close to your body to reduce strain on your back and arms.

Don't let back pain ruin your gardening season. If you're experiencing discomfort, our specialists are here to help. Call Maryland Orthopedic Specialists at (301) 515-0900 to schedule a consultation or request an appointment online.

Whether you play basketball, soccer, football, or ski on weekends, knowing how to protect your ACL and what to do if you get hurt can change everything. ✅

Prevention comes first:
🔹 Do a dynamic warm-up every time
🔹 Train proper jump-landing technique, keeping knees aligned
🔹 Strengthen hamstrings + hips to balance quad dominance
🔹 Perform balance & proprioception drills
🔹 Learn safe cutting + deceleration mechanics

If you do get hurt, modern techniques are changing the game, helping athletes get back faster than ever:

✅ Graft selection should be personalized to your sport, age, and anatomy. Quadriceps tendon grafts are showing strong results for psychological readiness at 6 months

✅ A new procedure called Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis (LET) cuts graft rupture rates by 67% for high-risk athletes returning to pivoting sports

Whatever you do, don't rush back before 9-12 months of recovery unless you want a 4x higher risk of a 2nd tear.

🏃 Active adults - don't ignore that pain or pop in the back of your ankle!

The Achilles tendon bears up to 8x your body weight when you walk, run or jump, which makes it especially prone to injury.

About 6% of the population are affected by an Achilles tendon disorder at some point during their lives, usually around age 30-50.

To protect your Achilles tendon:
👉 Increase training volume gradually, by 10% or less weekly
👉 Perform calf stretching after activity
👉 Wear appropriate footwear + replace running shoes regularly
👉 Seek evaluation for persistent pain

Most cases can be treated without surgery BUT early evaluation is key. Don't hesitate to reach out to us or schedule an appointment at our website so we can get you an evaluation.

Dr. Gary Feldman breaks down everything you need to know about Achilles injuries at our blog below.
