Such a great resource for preserving cemeteries with in the state of Tennessee. This will be a unique way for Historians, preservationists, and genealogists to help keep and maintain the rich history this state has built so far.

The Tennessee Historical Commission is excited to announce the release of the new Statewide Cemetery Map and Tennessee Historic Cemetery Register!

The Cemetery Map has been populated by data from the Commission’s cemetery database. Thanks to the efforts of Andrew McDonagh and Leah Fuller at TDEC and graduate assistant Heather White under the direction of Dr. Eileen G. Ermenwein at ETSU, the map contains more than 32,500 cemeteries statewide.

The Historic Cemetery Register provides the public with a way to extensively document historic cemeteries for the purpose of preservation efforts. Applications can be used to submit any information about particular cemeteries across the state.

How many of you know your connection to the Civil War? Many may see this a defining moment in our nation’s history where we not only began the long process of reunifying our broken nation. This moment also helped begin the process of establishing the powerful words “that all men are created equal,” from the Declaration of Independence at the birth of our nation. We have come a long way since this moment at the McLean family home in Appomattox, VA. There are many emotions expressed on both side North and South about this moment. What is your family’s role in the Civil War? How did your ancestors action on either side shape not only your family line but also these now United States in which we live. Today I wanted to share one of the early discoveries made when I began my researching back in 2013. The Bowen and Campbell families have been one of the earliest discoveries in my own family tree. The Bowen-Campbell House was build by Capt. William Bowen around 1787 and is located in Goodletsville TN. It is the oldest brick home in Middle Tennessee and has a rich history that can be experienced through tours through the offices of the Historic Mansker’s Station. I have spent many years driving past this area with no idea that I have a family connection to it’s early pioneer history as well as this history of our nations founding. Learning this information helped to spark a passion for the past and how it relates to us in our present day lives. My hope is to help others learn their real life connections to history.
